What's up !

I know, I know, it's been about 6 months since my last update. For good reason: BEEN CRAZY BUSY AND YOU'RE GONNA LOVE WHAT YOUR READ BELOW! I am already off and running crossing off items on my 2012 to-do list? How about you?

It's once again time for me to 'share the vibe' and inspire you by reminding you how much you can actually accomplish in one year. Ready? Set? Here we go!

1) YOUR NEW 2012 MOTTO: First off, something light. I declare that your new motto for the year should be "Happy as elves in 2012!" How happy is an elf? VERY happy, I assure you. ;)

2) BEST HOROSCOPE OF THE YEAR: I read this horoscope three weeks ago. I had to share it with you because it brightens my day every time I read it: "The only thing standing between you and a certain very desirable reality is the occasional mental interruption of the false though that you were not meant to have what you really want out of life."

3) WHAT I DID IN 2011. Ready to find out what one person can accomplish in just one year? Read this and get fired up by realizing how much you can really do in one year, and then, read the next email for an inspirational and motivational 2012 to-do list to help you make the most of this upcoming year.

a) In 2011, we finalized and edited the movie I co-produced, co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in, called, "You Can't Kill Stephen King" (with co-producer/director Ronnie Khalil and co-director Jorge Valdes-Iga) Have you seen the trailer yet for my/our feature film, "You Can't Kill Stephen King"? It is REALLY good. Plus, Fangoria Magazine wrote a story and did an interview. So did Gores Truly. So did a bunch of media outlets. b) In 2011, I finished writing two new books--both to be available in March: "Battle Cries for the Hollywood Underdog" with Lou Bortone, and Romantic Suicide--the 45 Unbreakable Rules of Dating. Both are due for release in March 2012.

c) In 2011, I learned (through much error) how NOT to screw up a relationship. See 'B' above. :) Only took me 34 years, haha.

d) In 2011, I started (and finished 1/4) of my PhD studies in Psychology. Yeah, my dream of becoming "Dr. Mann" is finally starting to come true. I have finished five courses so far, and have 9 more to go, my comprehensive exams, and finally, my dissertation. I'm probably going to do original research on attachment theory and obsession, or on social development and its correlation with someone's perceived level of attractiveness. P.S. - Capella University (capella.edu) is one of the best schools I have ever attended. Check it out if you're eager to get another degree. This school ROCKS.

e) In 2011, I... became a lawyer! I was admitted as an attorney in the state of New York in January of last year. I have since started my own law firm, and have accomplished quite a bit helping entertainment clients. I am proud to report that I am also currently being considered for a very prestigeous public service trial attorney position in Westchester County. More on that soon should anything develop...

f) In 2011, I produced and released "Get Off Your Ass", my full-length 30-track motivational speaking and inspirational music album! Have you checked it out yet? Imagine this: 15 original songs written and performed by me with my band. Then, 15 motivational speaking tracks of yours truly introducing and explaining each song in my trademarked style that you have come to know and love. Not yet convinced? FIrst off, there isn't a thing this guy hasn't done. Look him up, you'll find a biography that is nothing less than impressive. When I heard about a motivational CD, I honestly wasn't sure about that one...Is this music for easy, every day listening? Will I actually put a song on repeat just to get a laugh each time I heard it (Hollywood Girls)? TOTALLY! It's not a cheesy motivational speaker droning on and on about how "you can do it". It breaks that barrier down, and allows you to enjoy the whole CD. You get a great musical album, with some chit chat to break it up and keep you thinking.

h) In 2011, my dream of becoming a beach lifeguard came true! Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a lifeguard at Oakland Beach in Rye, NY--a beach I grew up on as a kid. Well... this past summer, I did it. I took a three-week lifeguarding course at the YMCA, and through persistence, I scored a job as a 'call-in' lifeguard, i.e. one who the full-time guards could call if they got sick. Well, before I could even start, someone quit. Guess who became a full-time lifeguard? It was AMAZING, and hands-down, the best and most fun job of my life. And I met some really great people on that beach. And if all goes well, I hope to do it again this summer, on weekends. SO MUCH FUN!!! I got paid to swim in the ocean and sit on a chair in the sun! And... put my EMT skills to good use. So awesome. You can find pics of me in my lifeguard uniform on my facebook page. :)

j) Finally, in 2011, I once again spoke at AFTRA, before a crowd of 75+ actors, musicians, and radio personalities. I am so proud to speak at the performance unions, and even more proud that I was rated as one of the best speakers at AFTRA, and the only one to consistently receive all 10's on a 1 to 10 scale, and even some 11s and 11.5s. :)

In fact, I have been invited to speak at AFTRA again, Tuesday night, January 24th, on "The Ten Easy Steps to Producing Your Own Projects". I hope you will be able to attend! Once again, I'll be playing a few songs from my album, "Get Off Your Ass". You'll be guaranteed to be inspired!

Are you ready to get more done in 2012 than ever before, and actually see more of your dreams come true than ever before? Well then... come to the edge of your seat... and read on!

****YOUR INSPIRATIONAL 2012 TO-DO LIST****

1) REMEMBER YOUR NEW 2012 MOTTO: Again I declare that your new motto for the year should be "Happy as elves in 2012!" How happy is an elf? VERY happy, I assure you, because they get LOTS done. ;) How do I know? I JUST KNOW, OKAY! ;)

2) POST THIS ON YOUR WALL: I read this horoscope three weeks ago. I had to share it with you because it brightens my day every time I read it: "The only thing standing between you and a certain very desirable reality is the occasional mental interruption of the false though that you were not meant to have what you really want out of life."

3) REMEMBER THAT SUCCESS IS PAINFUL.

I read a great quotation today in the Wall Street Journal, by Scott Adams, of Dilbert fame. He writes, "So far, my strategy of being more adventurous [in 2011] was producing mixed results. My life seemed richer and more interesting--but it also involved a lot more groaning, clutching my sides, and intermittently praying for death."

I laughed when I read that because it sounds exactly like my life. On one hand, I get lots of things done, and every year, I see my dreams coming true before my very eyes. On the other hand, it is NOT easy, and it is often times NOT pleasant. Many nights I am groaning with stress, clutching my sides, banging my head against the wall, and sometimes wishing I were dead. But on the flip side, I look back on my year and realize... "Huh... maybe all the heartache was worth it. Look at all I accomplished!"

So, you need to really ask yourself, "Which is more important to me? Success, or completely stressfree living? Success, or security? Success, or painless living? Are you starting to see my point? It is very hard to reach 'success' without also enduring pain, sacrifice, some misery, some crying, some headbanging, and the list goes on.

I hope you take some time to internalize this and realize that it's true: no pain, NO GAIN!

4) HOWEVER, THE FEELING OF ACCOMPLISHMENT FAR OUTWEIGHS THE PAIN IT TOOK TO GET YOUR THERE.

Adams ended his article with the following words, "You won't enjoy every new adventure, but I promise that you will enjoy being the person who said yes." In other words, say YES to new adventures this year. Don't shy away from things you fear. Don't stay inside. Don't do things the same old way.

For me, the direction you and I need to take is clear: the one that, yes, will cause you and me incredible pain, suffering, and misery--but that in the end will allow us to look back on 2012 and say, "wow, I did all that! HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!"

See, too many people look forward to their imagined great future, but only see the pain it will take to get there. Me? I don't see the pain that it is going to take to get me there. Instead, I see the feeling of accomplishment and vindication that I will experience once I do what I set out to do! Read this paragraph again please right now.

See the difference? Don't focus on the pain of accomplishment; focus on the pleasure of vindication. What a HUGE difference it will make in your life this year. For example, no one 'likes to go to the gym'--what you have to remember is how great it feels after you leave the gym, with your blood rushing, and your muscles toned, and your heart pumping. Ahh, feels great, right? Well THAT is what will get you into the gym. Remember that and apply it to everything you do this year.

5) REMEMBER: TO SUCCEED, YOU FIRST NEED TO FAIL.

Many people look at me and see my successes. They don't realize that it took five times as many failures to reach those successes. If you read my 2011 update email (coming shortly), you'll see that I accomplished quite a bit. But what I didn't mention is how many failures I had in 2011. Want to hear some of them? I failed the California bar exam. I was dumped by the 'girl of my dreams'. I almost got fired from my lifeguarding job for nearly getting into a fist fight with a patron. I got into numerous verbal fights with members of the cast and crew of my feature film. My music album did not sell as well as I had initially hoped. I nearly died while SCUBA diving when the air ran out of my tank. And this list goes on and on. 2011 was not in any way a 'perfect' year for me--in many ways, it has been terrible. But, it's because of these types of failures--the RISK TAKING that I participate in every day--that I have also had so many successes. So, go out and be willing to take chances, and embrace whatever failure you encounter--because for every few failures, life always tends to throw in a success here and there as well. But ONLY if you first embrace failure. That is key.

6) NOW, ESTABLISH YOUR TEN-YEAR PLAN. This is the most important thing you need to do. I'll say it again: you need to establish--i.e. WRITE DOWN--your ten-year plan. Too many people make plans for THIS year, without considering whether it is helping them get to where they need to be NEXT year, or more importantly, TEN years from now.

As I write in my book, Time Zen, "if you want to become a master of your time, you need to first ensure that every second of time you spend on anything is time well spent."

I want you to take an hour and write down where you hope to be in ten years--where you hope to be living, in a house or apartment, where, with whom, what is your yearly salary, how many bank accounts, how much money in those bank accounts, etc. Then... when you make your plans for this year, just make sure they are leading you on your ten-year plan journey. Make sure that every task on your to-do list for TODAY, leads you to where you want to be IN TEN YEARS. This is a tough exercise, but the benefits far outweigh the pain it takes putting it together. :)

7) BECOME MORE EFFICIENT: People seem to think that I have more time in my day than they do. Or, they ask, "Do you sleep?"---as if the only way I could possibly do all I do is because I somehow don't have to sleep. Actually, I sleep more than you do, I bet. My secret is this: I do not waste the time I have WHEN I AM AWAKE. While others are spending 4 hours watching tv, I am writing a book. While others are spending 4 hours at the gym, I spend only 1 hour at the gym, do not socialize while I am there, and spend the other 3 hours working on a PhD. Does this make sense? I hope so, because if it doesn't, you will NEVER accomplish what you want in life. Unless you are willing to focus on the tasks that are going to get you where you are going, you are going to be scratching your head this day in 2013 and wonder, "Why didn't I get more done?" DO NOT WASTE ANOTHER DAY! Cause honestly, today could be your last.

8) REMEMBER YOUR WHY: the reason why most people are lazy and don't get things done is because they do not have a strong enough 'why'. Isn't it interesting that you suddenly start going to the gym three times a week right before a big date, or a summer trip to Florida, etc? Isn't it interesting that you don't do research for your homework assignment until a week prior, and then suddenly you're working like a madman to catch up? This is all a result of an intensified 'why'. Same thing applies to anything--even your dreams. You will NEVER do anything to lead you towards your dreams unless the 'why' is strong enough within your soul to get you off your couch and into action. So, take some time to figure out what YOUR why is. If it's not strong enough to get you up and out of bed and into action every day--and doing the HARD stuff that you really don't want to do--then FIGURE IT OUT YOU LAZY BUM!!! Figure it out... or your dreams may never come true. (I write more about this in my book "Time Zen")

9) KEEP THE PROMISE THAT YOU KEPT: That is the name of the first song on my album, "Get Off Your Ass". I wrote it to remind you (and me) that we have dreams within our souls that we promised years ago that we would never give up. Well, in the song, and today, I urge you to 'keep the promise that you kept within you'. That promise is still there. Deep down. And you owe it to yourself to remember all of your childish dreams, and bring that back to the forefront. Remember when you wanted to become a fireman? It's not too late--become a volunteer! Go interview a fireman! Go write a screenplay about a fireman and play the lead role! the possibilities are endless. But whatever you do, don't give up your dreams, thinking, "Oh, what's the point?" I think that way sometimes. I do. But then I remember that SOMEONE has to succeed! SOMEONE has to be on the cover of the next People magazine--OKAY, THIS IS SUPER IRONIC, GIVEN WHAT I WAS JUST WRITING: I just got a phone call from one of the top three talent agencies in the world. Why? They want to see the trailer for my movie! For "You Can't Kill Stephen King"! HOW EXCITING IS THAT!

Here is my bottom line: IT IS UP TO YOU TO MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!

Look, I really need you to understand something. It's so important that I am including for you below the entire introduction to my book, "Time Zen".

INTRODUCTION – A NEW PARADIGM

The truth of the matter is that most major success in this right-brain, internet-connected, uber-competitive world no longer comes from doing things consecutively. If you do things consecutively, you lose. That is a fact. Slow and steady may have won the race in the past, but today, in order to even get into the race, you have to be the one organizing it too, and doing everything all at the same time.

In other words, in today's world, it's the multitasker who wins the race—because often you can't get into the race unless you put the thing together too. Sure, forty years ago, you could focus on one trade and get a job that would support you for the rest of your life. These days, though, you're fortunate if you have the same job in the same industry for a few years. The time to become a little bit more diverse in your pursuits has returned. Da Vinci would be proud.

And in this new day and age, if you can't keep up with those of us who know 'how to juggle' multiple projects, then tough luck, you're gonna be left in the dust. Yes, we have entered the age of the time masters, and you would choose well to join us. While time itself moves forward on a single timeline, that doesn't mean your projects have to move forward on that single timeline. Instead, the idea is to propel many projects forward on a whole bunch of timelines.

In other words (and here's the basic time philosophy of the book):

Doing one thing at a time is a recipe for a life that won't keep up with your dreams.

You see, while each of us does only have 24 hours in a day, that's the wrong way to look at time management. The key to successfully doing more, in less time, and with better results, is to stop thinking linearly, and start thinking spacially and synergistically.

Think about it conceptually: we may only have 24 hours in a day, but if we can each learn to juggle three or four balls during every hour (instead of just one), we essentially end up with 96 hours of effectiveness per day. Quite a jump in productivity.

And while the floor space of our lives—like the floor space of our offices—may be limited, if we conceptually understand the idea of 'juggling', it should be clear that by juggling your various projects and dreams up off the two dimensional timeline, and into the three dimensional space above and around you, you are going to be able to take on and handle a heck of a lot more projects than you normally could.
Remember the key premise of this book: doing one thing at a time is a recipe for a life that won't keep up with your dreams. I know we've all heard that it's better to do one thing at a time, and put all of our energy into that one thing until completion, and then move onto the next thing… but that just won't work if you have great ambition and want to live a greater than average life. Think of all those people who have done amazing things with their lives. For example, Da Vinci, Edison, Thatcher, and even in our own time, Spielberg or Stefani. Do you really think that they've done so much with their lives by focusing on just one thing, and then moving to the next in a linear manner? Da Vinci was working on scientific musings at the same time he was drawing, inventing, and theoreticizing. Spielberg was writing screenplays while he was directing them, producing them, and casting them. Edison was failing for the thousandth time on the light bulb while he was working on hundreds of other inventions at the same time. Stefani was recording while designing clothes. And I am writing this book while I am also writing three others, while in law school, while shooting two films, while running my businesses, and while rehearsing my songs to perform at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn. Focusing on only one niche is a foolish gamble. Do you really want to be one of those boring people who only has the ability to speak to one select group of people at a social gathering—seriously, folks, that is so boring.

I know that some studies have concluded that multitasking actually reduces the amount of brain power we are using, citing examples that today's youth know all about multitasking and processing, but little about focusing and analysis. There may be a lot of truth to that analysis but it leaves out an important point: multitasking and processing by itself may be of little use, but when you combine those qualities with focus and analysis, it's quite amazing what one can accomplish. And that is what this book is all about.

My point is simply this: you can come up with as many excuses as you like to rationalize what I call 'your laziness', but in the end, if you want to make things happen in this life, you have to learn to multitask. And that requires the mastery of your time.

You have to learn to squeeze every valuable second out of every valuable minute in such a way that it encourages the time efficiency you are seeking. In other words, in order to juggle projects, you need to have control over your time; you cannot let time control you.

And not surprisingly, the more efficient you are with time, the more organized your space will become too—they are absolutely related. And the more organized your space, the more quickly you will get things done because everything is well organized. Make sense? Good, because now this is where things may get confusing.

When I say 'time', I don't just mean 60 minutes in every hour. I mean that the more efficient you become, you'll actually learn how to get 180 minutes out of every hour—through efficiency, delegation, productivity, etc. Said another way, your space is where you are able to apply the time you have. If you are the most amazing time zen master ever… but your life as a whole is a mess, then you're not going to get very far. Conversely, if your life's space is clearly organized, but you are not able to manage time very well… again, you're not going to get very far. In other words, you cannot be good at time management if you are disorganized, and you cannot be organized if you don't know how to properly manage your time—for what is time management but clearly organized use of your time. That's what this book is going to show you how to do.

People sometimes call me a 'jack of all trades'. That is inaccurate. I am not a jack of all trades—I am a master of many trades. I do many things, and I do many things exceedingly well. I encourage you to become the same; I encourage you to become a master of many disciplines. Not only is it possible—it is downright essential. Ladies and gentlemen, your very economic survival depends on it.

In other words... GET OFF YOUR ASS PEOPLE!! Stop being lazy. Stop coming up with excuses. Stop wondering why last year wasn't your 'best year', and instead, jump off the couch and make you own big breaks already and make THIS YEAR your best yeaer! DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM SAYING?

Are you REALLY in love?

Are you REALLY in love?

Bergner (2000) cites 7 required elements that you or your romantic partner must have in order to fully be considered, 'in love'. The article goes over the seven key elements required for love:

1) Investment in the well being of the beloved,

2) Appreciation and Admiration,

3) Sexual Desire,

4) Intimacy/Inclusion,

5) Commitment,

6) Exclusivity, and

7) Understanding.

If you don't feel one of these requirements for your partner, you probably do not feel 'in love' yet. If, on the other hand, you DO feel 'in love', but lack one of these requirements, you do not technically have true love for your partner, and you should ask yourself why you are missing one of the requirements. In this latter case, you may have a form of love, but not true 'romantic' love.

I would like to add that based on the above, you can technically be in love with someone else even if the feelings are not reciprocated, i.e. 1) ready and willing to invest in the well being of the beloved, 2) having deep appreciation and admiration for him/her, 3) having sexual desire for him/her, 4) wanting intimacy and inclusion in his/her life, 5) desiring commitment with that person, 6) desiring exclusivity, and 7) holding an understanding of the other person.

I have recently found that it is helpful to share this list with romantic partners, so that they too can better understand what love is. If you both discuss where you both are on each of the 7 requirements, you can work towards kindling (or rekindling) the love in your relationships.

The following discussion post is the result of one of my recent PhD assignments. As many of you know, I am pursuing my PhD in psychology through Capella University. I thought it was general enough to be of interest to you guys. Enjoy.

DISCUSSION QUESTION: How would you instruct an individual to be more or less conforming, compliant, or obedient? Support your approach with citations from the text and resources you have used.

Both the Milgram (1963) experiment and Kassin, Fein, & Markus (2008) explain that in order to get someone to do what you want to do, the easiest (and most assured) way of doing so is to slowly chip away at their defenses. In other words, it is very difficult to make someone do a full 180 in one fell swoop; it is far easier to get someone to make small 1 degree changes in succession. This is one of the key reasons why the Milgram experiment worked--the experimenter asked the subjects to give the shocks in small incrementally-larger amounts. Had the experimenter simply said, "Give the learner an XXX level shock," the subjects would in all likelihood not have complied.

Before discussing ways to avoid falling victim to unwanted compliance, it is important to first understand some of the key compliance and persuasive strategies that psychologists have proven to work effectively. Kassin, Fein, & Markus (2008) provide a number of these strategies that can be used to help secure compliance with your wishes:

a) WORDS: simply by putting the word 'because' in your request, you will increase the likelihood of the other person's compliance. Further, by making your request as odd as possible, you also increase the odds that the target person will stop his thought processes and actually consider what you are requesting.

b) RECIPROCITY: No one likes to be in someone else's debt. In other words, if someone gives you a gift, you are in all likelihood going to reciprocate in some way, in an effort to even things out. Therefore, if you want someone to do something, you might want to give that person a gift first.

c) FOOT IN THE DOOR: Get someone to COMPLY with a small request first, and then they will be more likely to later agree to the more important real request.

d) LOW-BALLING: Get someone to AGREE with a small request first, and then turn around and increase the size of the original request, and the person is likely to feel an obligation to go through with the transaction anyway. Notice that low balling and foot in the door are virtually the same, except in the latter, you only need 'agreement' whereas in the former, you also need 'compliance'.

e) DOOR IN THE FACE: This is the opposite of the foot in the door. Instead of securing compliance with a small request and following up with a larger request, this technique starts with a HUGE outlandish request, and upon rejection, follows up with a smaller (real) request. An example might work with a girl: if you first invite her to marry you, she will likely laugh and say no, but then, when you ask her to dinner, it doesn't seem so bad. :) The same technique is the punchline to a joke I once heard. A college student writes home to her parents: "I'm sorry, and I don't know what to tell you, but I'm pregnant, I crashed the car you let me borrow, I was arrested for attempted murder, and I need you to bail me out of jail. Actually, none of that is true. I just wanted you to know I scored an F in biology. -Jenny" This technique is also sometimes called the 'high ball' technique.

f) THAT'S NOT ALL FOLKS: In this reverse of the "door in the face", you would first make an inflated request, and then, soften it up and reduce the perceived size of the request by offering a discount or a bonus. In this case, the price remains the same, but you increase the value by adding additional items or nicknacks. This is like the 'high ball/door in the face' technique, but a) the starting amount here is at least somewhat reasonable, and b) the amount does NOT change (as it does in the high-ball). g) AUTHORITY: If you can come across as a person of authority, people will tend to obey you. If you can act like you are a true authority figure, that will help. If you can wear a uniform that conveys authority, that will help. If your name or title bring with them a nature of authority, that too will help.

h) SOCIAL IMPACT THEORY: Latane (1981) believes that social influence is a result of three factors: 1) the source's strength, 2) the source's immediacy, and 3) the source's number. The strength of a source "is determined by his or her status, ability, or relationship to a target. The stronger the source, the greater the influence." (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2008). Immediacy simply refers to how close the source is in time and space to the target. Finally, number means that the influence of a single source will increase with the addition of more sources up to a total of FOUR. Beyond four, the effect was negligible.

Therefore, if someone wanted to be more or less compliant, here are the factors he must consider:

a) be aware of the words someone says--to be less compliant, don't let words like 'because' influence you;

b) be aware of the effects of receiving something from someone else--to be less compliant, be suspicious whenever someone gives you a gift or does you a favor, and do not feel obligated to satisfy the social norms of society, i.e. reciprocity;

c) be aware of the various sequential request strategies (foot in door, low-balling, door in face, and that's not all)--the more aware you are of these techniques, the less likely you are to succumb to their effects.

d) be aware of the authority of the person making the request--to avoid blind compliance, truly consider the source's authority, and whether he really has the authority to make the particular request he is making.

e) be aware of the source's strength--consider who the person is who is talking to you if you want to be sure you are not being influenced solely because of the person's relationship to you;

f) be aware of the source's immediacy--to avoid becoming blindly compliant, consider where the source is in relation to you when making his request; also consider the surrounding events in terms of the time period in which the request is being made.

g) be aware of the source's number--if there are 2, 3, 4, or more people 'pressuring' you to do something, do not succumb to what is often known as 'peer pressure' or sometimes the 'tyranny of the majority'. Stay independent and trust your judgment. (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2008).

History Lesson: Hitler vs. Mao vs. Stalin

Okay, so here's another history lesson. I mentioned Hitler last week on Facebook. This week, Stalin & Mao. Many people seem to think that Hitler was the worst offender of human rights in the history of the world, but alas, two facts seem to be overlooked: a) Hitler's death toll was about 10 - 14 million people (not counting war casualties) whereas Stalin's death toll was approximately 20 million, and b) Mao's (Gasp!) death toll at his hands was between 49 and 79 MILLION people! Is there a correlation between the regimes of Stalin and Mao besides their terrible death tolls? Yes--both were communist of the highest order. Anyone who claims that there is no causation between communism and terrible death tolls is simply ignoring history. Hitler was terrible, but it is arguable that Stalin and Mao were FAR FAR worse.

A) The trailer for my (our) film You Can't Kill Stephen King is DONE!!--and is going to blow you away when we launch it.

B) I finished writing my new book, "Romantic Suicide -- The 45 Unbreakable Rules of Dating". I hope to release it early 2012.

C) The new music video, for my song, "Life is Tough" is about to launch. If you haven't already, check out the first video on youtube, for "The Sun Is Always Shining Somewhere."

D) My PhD studies in psychology are an absolute BLAST.

E) I am heading to New Hampshire tomorrow morning for 5 days to renew my Wilderness and City EMT (Emergency Medical Tech) certifications.

The Lovely IRS

Just a quick fact for everyone to ponder: this country did quite well without the IRS for many years. For 5 years? For 10 years? For 25 years? NO, FOR NEARLY 100 YEARS. The IRS was not founded until 1862, during the civil war, and only in 1913 was the 16th amendment passed as a result of a three-quarter majority vote by the states.

Origin
The roots of IRS go back to the Civil War when President Lincoln and Congress, in 1862, created the position of commissioner of Internal Revenue and enacted an income tax to pay war expenses. The income tax was repealed 10 years later. Congress revived the income tax in 1894, but the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional the following year.

16th Amendment
In 1913, Wyoming ratified the 16^th Amendment, providing the three-quarter majority of states necessary to amend the Constitution. The 16^th Amendment gave Congress the authority to enact an income tax. That same year, the first Form 1040 appeared after Congress levied a 1 percent tax on net personal incomes above $3,000 with a 6 percent surtax on incomes of more than $500,000.

In 1918, during World War I, the top rate of the income tax rose to 77 percent to help finance the war effort. It dropped sharply in the post-war years, down to 24 percent in 1929, and rose again during the Depression. During World War II, Congress introduced payroll withholding and quarterly tax payments.

A New Name
In the 50s, the agency was reorganized to replace a patronage system with career, professional employees. The Bureau of Internal Revenue name was changed to the Internal Revenue Service. Only the IRS commissioner and chief counsel are selected by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

Today's IRS Organization
The IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998 prompted the most comprehensive reorganization and modernization of IRS in nearly half a century. The IRS reorganized itself to closely resemble the private sector model of organizing around customers with similar needs.

Hey All,

Been a while since I've 'shared the vibe' about what I've been up to lately. I appreciate you reading about my adventures, and hope it inspires you in some way to get off your ass and do great things with your life too!

A) PHD UPDATE -- as many of you know, I am now pursuing a PhD in psychology through Capella University, one of the greatest schools I have ever attended. Brilliantly organized, brilliant professors, brilliant students. Couldn't ask for a better learning program. This school is the unsung hero of modern education, and the vanguard of what is to come. Seriously, if you are considering a degree, I can recommend no better place than http://www.capella.edu/. My PhD dissertation topic as of today will be answering this question: what is the correlation -- if any -- between an individuals' attachment style and infatuation. Another possibility is whether an individual's attachment style is fixed, or whether it changes depending on circumstances and environment.

B) TWO NEW BOOKS COMING SOON -- I am excited to report that two new Monroe Mann books are coming out in the next few months. The first, "Romantic Suicide - The 12 Unbreakable Rules of Dating" is a book born of my own foibles and 'learning experiences' in the dating world. I have learned what TO do by focusing on what NOT to do--in other words, this book will show you how to succeed by showing how not to fail. Just like all my other books, it is very inspiring, and in fact, can be applied to any type of negotiation, since many of the rules are equally applicable there.

The second book is entitled, "Battle Cries for the Hollywood Underdog" and is co-written with the great Lou Bortone. If you liked my first Battle Cries book, you're going to love this one too--particularly if you pursuing an impossible dream such as showbiz success.

F) FILING FIRST FEDERAL LAWSUIT IN TWO WEEKS -- I am an attorney, and in about two weeks, I am filing my first federal lawsuit in the Eastern District of New York on behalf of a client. G) LIFEGUARD SUMMER/EMT RENEWAL -- Guess what? I was a beach lifeguard this past summer at Oakland Beach in Rye, NY! What great fun that was--truly, no joke, a dream come true. Something I have wanted to do for many many years, since I was a little kid. And I had the time of my life! In related news, I need to renew my EMT license, which expires early next year. To that end, I am making plans to return to http://www.soloschools.com/ in New Hampshire to renew not only my EMT license, but also my WEMT (Wilderness EMT) certification as well.

H) AMATEUR RADIO LICENSE -- Speaking of renewals, I just renewed my general class amateur radio license. Don't know what that is? That's okay--many don't. It is an FCC issued radio license that allows me to use radios to communicate cross-town, cross-country, and even across the globe. I have had conversations (by voice and morse code) with people as far away as Australia and China... all by using radio waves. Pretty cool. Amateur radio licenses last for ten years, so I'm good now until 2022!

I) RANDOM OTHER STUFF --In other news, I am barefoot as I write this post. I also just want to send a shout out to Herman Cain, who I think has a real shot at the presidency next year, and who clearly has a genuine concern for our nation. I recently traveled to Germany to visit my friend Louisa, and visited Denmark with her too, which was only a 90-minute drive from her house. I also traveled to Maine twice with my friends over the summer. I sadly had to get rid of my t-mobile sidekick about six months ago because the new Android powered one is TERRIBLE; I now have a blackberry. It was a tough call between a blackberry and an iphone, except that the blackberry only cost $25, so... easy decision. Another shout-out to Steve Jobs, who truly had as much an impact on this world as Socrates, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and Da Vinci. Well done sir! Let us ALL try to be as influential and significant as Jobs--shall we?

ZEN BUDDHIST PSYCHOLOGY'S TIME HAS ARRIVED.

Despite popular belief, Buddhism and modern Western psychology have much in common. Today, modern psychology is beginning to learn from and embrace the teachings of the Buddhists. Buddhism in turn is benefiting from modern psychology's experiments that are proving that Buddhism has a great deal of scientific merit as a psychological theory of treatment and/or a preventative measure.

Buddhism has for the last 2,500 years focused exclusively on developing a positive and healthy mental state. Clinical psychology, however, has almost exclusively (and historically) focused on curing mental ailments. In many ways, therefore, Buddhism was ahead of its time given the recent advent of positive psychology. (Wallace & Shapiro, 2006).

In trying to understand why Buddhism was not embraced in earlier centuries by the West, it may perhaps be understandable given the East’s failure to impress the West with its offerings at the time. In the centuries before our own, Japan and China and the East in general were involved in bitter feuds between warlords, and were not focused on scientific inquiry as was the West. Further, in some cases, e.g. Japan, the East was purposely isolating itself from the West, which further dampened any cross-scientific pollination. (Sato & Sato, 2005). However, today, the world has opened up its scientific trading routes, and the West today even tips her hat to Japan’s automotive prowess and to China’s immense manufacturing empire—a clear sign that the West can (and does) now learn from the East.

For example, Western psychology has recently come to agreement with Buddhist psychology in finding that happiness resulting from internal mental training is far more durable than 'happiness' resulting from stimulus-driven pleasures. (Wallace & Shapiro, 2006). This in turn is one of the bases of positive psychology. While there has often been a debate over the merits of Western vs. Eastern philosophies, religion, and science, the recent melding of the two cultural approaches to psychology may ultimately prove how similar we all are, and may introduce new and more effective treatment methods.

On that note, an interesting dichotomy is that which separates mindfulness practice (e.g. Buddhism) from cognitive therapy. (Wallace & Shapiro, 2006). Mindfulness encourages the practitioner to change one's relationship to thoughts, instead of changing the content of thoughts themselves. On the flip side, cognitive therapy actually emphasizes the changing of the content of thoughts themselves. While at first glance, it appears that the approaches are opposed to one another, further investigation may show that the two therapies can work together, thus melding Buddhism with cognitive therapy. Many studies (such as those cited in this discussion) are beginning to show the similarities between and/or the complementary aspects of Buddhist teachings and cognitive therapy.

In other words, what Buddhist monks and zen masters have practiced for thousands of years as a mere cultural tradition, Western science is now proving to be powerful psychology. Buddhism states that our misguided attempts to find happiness through external means are a result of our confusion about what really brings true happiness. (Wallace & Shapiro, 2006). Modern Western psychological research by Nanamoli & Bodhi (1995) have helped to confirm these Buddhist beliefs.

Further, Western science has begun to overturn some scientific beliefs as a result of investigations into Buddhist theories. For example, until recently, Western science believed that one's level of happiness was primarily genetically determined. Buddhists, however, have always believed that one's happiness is not fixed but can be consciously cultivated, and have for centuries practiced meditation, claiming that this practice boosts happiness. Indeed, in 2003, Davidson et al. concluded that novice meditation practice was associated with a clear increase in brain activity of the left frontal cortex, an area known to be associated with positive emotions. (Wallace & Shapiro, 2006). Further, Benson (1997) helped to show a connection between meditation and lower stress levels. (Tyson & Pongruengphant, 2007). In other words, Western science has helped to prove that the Buddhist ideas of 'self', ‘interconnectedness', and 'meditation' may have more relevance to Western clinical psychology than historically presumed.

For these reasons, Western positive and cognitive psychology today embrace Buddhism as a key to better understanding the human condition, and how best to live a life without negative anxiety and stress. Buddhism seeks to do this by endowing its practitioners with a state of well-being that results from "freeing the mind of its afflictive tendencies and obscurations". (Wallace & Shapiro, 2006). While traditional psychology once only viewed the self as a fixed entity, Gergen & Kaye (1992) noted that "it is not independent selves who come together to form a relationship, but particular forms of relationships that engender what we take to be the individual's identity." (Sugamura, Haruki, & Koshikawa, 2007). In other words, modern psychology's tendency to view a patient as an island--as a problem in a vacuum--may not tell the whole story. Indeed, no man is an island, and it is not our solitude that makes us who we are, but our interaction with others. In this regard (and in many others), modern psychology is finally beginning to realize that Buddhist psychological teachings have merit, and indeed, great merit.

Nonetheless, modern Western science has not yet fully embraced Zen Buddhism as an effective psychological treatment. This is perhaps ironic because the major objective of Zen teaching is to free the individual from the chains of the physical world and the mental obstacles that cloud a full awareness of the self and the world. (Berger, 1962). Does this not appear to be exactly what positive psychology and the humanists aim to do?

Therefore, perhaps the alleged differences between modern psychology and Buddhism are more a result of cultural blindness and a refusal to 'see'. From the above analysis, it should be clear that these two schools of thought (Western psychology and Buddhist psychology) have far more in common than is popularly recognized.

EXPERIMENTAL SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY BEGAN WITH WUNDT; SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY WITH PYTHAGORAS

Psychology itself is argued to be a relatively new science, as encapsulized in Herman Ebbinghaus' observation that "psychology has a long past, but only a short history." (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2008). Further, social psychology itself is argued to have an even shorter history, with researchers such as Kassin, Fein, & Markus (2008) stating that the field was created in the late 19th century by psychologists such as Triplett and Ringelmann.

On the contrary, it was William Wundt, the founder of experimental psychology (Hergenhahn, 2009) who in fact should be credited as the founder of experimental social psychology (Greenwood, 2003). According to Greenwood, the term 'social psychology' was in fact first promulgated by Wundt in his 10-volume Volkerpsychologie.

While it is clear that Wundt did not make the 'leap' that Triplett and Ringelmann made by finding correlations between the social variable and the human behavior variable, to claim that social psychology only began in the late 1890s is to discount Wundt's clear contributions to the field, i.e. by laying the experimental foundation upon which others built the field.

While it is true that Wundt did not believe that social psychological phenomena could be measued experimentally (Greenwood, 2003), the fact that he even made such a statement shows that he was indeed thinking of social psychology many years before anyone else in the field. Greenwood (2003) believes that Volkerpsychologie is in fact an early form of social psychology.

While Kassin, Fein, and Markus (2008) do recognize that Plato potentially discussed some social psychological phenomena, I posit that social psychology's foundation itself began even earlier than Plato. While Wundt may have been the foundation of experimental social psychology, I argue that social psychological phenomena (or at least the foundation for them) were--long before Plato--being considered by philosophers such as Pythagoras, Protagoras, Xenophanes, and Socrates. (Hergenhahn, 2003).

First, I believe that Pythagoras laid the foundation for correlational research with his postulation that everything could be explained with numbers. Next, Protagoras helped to show the unique psychological makeup of human beings with his statement that "man is the measure of all things". Later, Xenophanes concluded that religion was a human invention (certainly one of the world's first social psychological hypotheses: that the human condition encouraged humans to fabricate the idea of 'God' as a way to make this life more bearable). And finally, Socrates perhaps made the biggest contribution of all to social psychology with his statement: "Know thyself". That statement is so profound that indeed it seems to be the modern battle cry of social psychological research, which focuses on the study of... the individual.

In conclusion, while more modern researchers such as Triplett and Ringelmann certainly marked the definitive codification of experimental social psychology, the actual establishment of experimental social psychology clearly rests with Wundt, and the foundation with the early Greek philosophers. Perhaps the history of psychology (and therefore social psychology) is not as short as Ebbinghaus believes.

Once again, I preface this email by letting you know that in no way am I bragging; I like to consider it just "sharing the vibe". Honestly, I hope something you read will inspire you to do even more great stuff with your life too!

Without further ado, this is what I've been up to lately:

1) SEMINAR TONIGHT AT AFTRA -- first off, I am teaching an inspiring seminar tonight at AFTRA in NYC entitled, "The Science of Stardom". Looking forward to seeing a bunch of you there. Doors open at 5:30pm

2) PhD IN PSYCHOLOGY. -- I just finished my LLM (Masters of Law) in commercial real estate transactions, and this past week, began my PhD in psychology at Capella University. Why psychology? Because it's time for me to figure out why our brains tick as they do. Why do men and women interact the way they do. Why do I do what I do? I'll keep you posted along the way. :)

3) NEW BOOKS! I have a new book coming out in a few months called, "Battle Cries for the Hollywood Underdog", co-written with online video expert Lou Bortone up in Boston. 7) OUR HORROR MOVIE IS ALMOST FINISHED! -- As many of you know, Ronnie Khalil, Jorge Valdes-Iga, and myself co-directed a comedy-horror feature film last summer in Maine (that Ronnie & I wrote with Bob Madia) called, "You Can't Kill Stephen King". We're almost at picture lock, and are sending the locked cut to our audio guys in a couple weeks to put in the music and soundtrack and all that stuff. Really really excited, and we hope to have the entire film DONE by the end of September! I play a character named Monroe int he film, cause it's sorta based on a true story... sort of.

8) AND SOME ADDITIONAL RANDOM NEWS -- I gave up smoking today!--oh wait, no, I don't smoke. Never mind. In other news, I am being interviewed tomorrow on a radio show in Connecticut. Check my tour calendar link below for more details.

9) CAREER COACHING: I am still the best career coach you can find. Cocky? No. Confident. Yeah, a new daily reality show---meaning, the next one is today! And the next day... is episode 3! One new 2-minute episode every day... starting as of yesterday.

It's called Reality Check-In w/Monroe Mann (tentative title---if any of you have suggestions for a better one as you watch it, let me know).

It's a unique concept: it's a reality show completely shot, edited, encoded, and uploaded entirely on my ipod Touch. In other words, the production studio comes with me wherever I go, and each day, I am going to 'check in' from wherever I am with some insight, humor, inspiration, advice, etc.

The first episode's location was last night in... my bed. :)

The second will be today at 36 Street Studio/Precision Photos in midtown Manhattan where I am giving a seminar (today, Thursday, at 1PM) on the top five legal lessons for artists.

The third one will be Friday (from the tanning salon), the 4th on Saturday (I think from the movies), and on Sunday, I'll be doing one from the airport heading to Florida to shoot my music video. In Florida, I'll do another on the beach in Naples with Anatoli and George. I'll do others from the road; from Pace Law's library; from the court house; from casting sessions; from my local pizzeria; and from wherever else I end up on the rise of the RoMann Empire. Not only will you now get to keep tabs on what I'm doing, but you'll get pumped up, inspired, or just plain laugh with each new episode as well.

Plus, whoever happens to be around me at the time will potentially be on that particular episode (so you'll soon be meeting my buddies Roberto and Helen!) And wherever I am at the time gets the publicity for that location.

Most importantly, every episode will leave you thinking about SOMETHING that'll enrich your life in some way. Promise. :)

This reality show is potentially (we hope) a way to build up that fanbase. That's why it's experimental---if after a few months, it hasn't show signs of growth, I'll pull the plug. Yo Unstoppable One,

I've got some really exciting stuff going on, and I hope by reading what I am up to, you are inspired to go out there and DO MORE to make your dreams come true. Remember, I ain't bragging—I am simply 'sharing the vibe'.

Remember, folks, you are not limited by the size of your dreams, but rather, you are limited by your laziness in the pursuit of your dreams. So… (like my new motivational rock album of the same name)… GET OFF YOUR ASS and do it already.

Without further ado, thanks for your support, and here's what I'm up to lately:

A)    MUSIC VIDEO SHOOT A SUCCESS! I am excited to report that the NY portions of my music video shoot are 90% done, and next week, actress/dancer superb Anatoli Grek and I are flying down to Florida to finish the shoot in sunny Naples, Florida! Anatoli Grek is the lovely, beautiful, and talented star of the video for my song, "The Sun is Always Shining Somewhere" (Click here to listen to the entire song for free). This video is the first for my new album, "Get Off Your Ass", which is a motivational rock extravaganza that combines 15 motivational speaking tracks with 15 original inspirational songs.   It's a really unique video that I wrote and am directing that tells the story of two people (guess who?), and how their two stories intertwine. I am going to edit the video in a very unique split screen format that shows both stories happening simultaneously—Anatoli's character in New York City; and my character in Florida. If you're wondering why, then, we are BOTH going down to Florida—well, you'll just have to watch the video to see! I expect it will be completely edited and posted up on YouTube by the end of the month. Yee haw! Special thanks to crew members: Amanda Costopoulos, Nick Aeschilman, and Matt Defazio, and a shout out to my Florida coordinator, George Oberdoster, and my number one fan ever in the world, Debbie Bordelon who is working her ass off to get the song onto more radio stations.

It plays every day, no matter who the DJ is, cause it is programmed to! How awesome is that! D) FEATURE FILM GOING INTO SOUND POST PRODUCTION – As you may know, Ronnie Khalil and I finally got our asses into gear and shot our feature-length horror comedy last summer in Maine called, "You Can't Kill Stephen King". The 3^rd rough cut was just delivered tonight, and I'm stoked to report that the next cut will be final cut (picture lock), and then all that will remain is sound editing, and some additional post production work. So, we're looking at a September/October completion date. Given that I co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in the film, I am pretty excited that it's actually almost done! Especially since the movie is mentioned on virtually every Stephen King fan site worldwide! Fingers crossed that the film does well!

E) GUESS WHAT? YOU NOW KNOW AN ENTERTAINMENT ATTORNEY – If you don't know an entertainment attorney… you do now. I'm amazed and honored at how many entertainment cases have come my way in the last couple of months to include copyright infringement; international stalker matters, YouTube and Blogger defamation; film option agreements; tv option agreements; film company partnership agreements; contract negotiation; representation agreements; as well as civil litigation matters for both copyright and conversion of film footage. It's pretty exciting, and I'm thrilled to be able to help all of my talented and awesome clients. My biggest case right now involves filing a lawsuit against one of the biggest corporations in the world, as well as its advertising agencies, and two other defendants for copyright infringement. F) CALIFORNIA BAR EXAM – While we're on the legal train, I figure I should let you all know that I just took the California bar exam out in Ontario, CA (which is about 30 minutes from Pasadena and an hour from Santa Monica—where I had lunch on the pier as I reviewed my notes before the exam). It was a grueling 3-day exam (the same length of time it took me to do NY & NJ combined!) and honestly, it's a toss up whether I passed. It was indeed harder than the NY bar exam, but not by much--both were absolutely grueling. On the bright side, I have the same feeling I had last summer when I took NY & NJ—I really wasn't sure how I did. Why is that good? Well, in the end, I ended up passing both NY & NJ, so I'm hoping for a repeat performance given that I have the same queezy feeling in my stomach. Worst part? Won't find out if I passed until May 16^th. Blech. Fortunately, I am staying busy in the meantime.

G) AMAZING REVIEW ABOUT "GUERRILLA NETWORKING" – I received the nicest email yesterday from one of my readers. I was so touched by what he wrote that I asked if I could copy his email and share it with you guys. He said yes. Here it is, redacted slightly for privacy:

This sensational book of yours that I just finished reading - "Guerilla Networking" - it is exactly what I bargained for, and so much more, when I excitedly snatched it off the bookshelf at the Georgetown Barnes & Noble, where from I now write you (actually, just down the street from there at one of Howard Schultz's favorite Starbucks stores in Washington, DC).

L)     RANDOM OTHER THINGS – And in other news, I am pleased to report I went scuba diving in January down in Fort Lauderdale; pleased to report that over the summer, I put my 'rescue diver' and 'EMT' license to good use by rescuing a man who was drowning while swimming; pleased to report that I am just about done with my LLM (Master of Laws) in Commercial Real Estate Law; and am pleased to report that I am officially starting my PhD in Human Behavior/Psychology this May. Very excited about that last one.

Don't Give Up!

I just posted this as my status on Facebook:

"By the way, folks: DON'T GIVE UP! If you are thinking it's time to throw in the towel, thinking, "why should I try again when I have failed so many times b4", here's the answer: THIS TIME MAY BE DIFFERENT! True, if you try again, you might fail again, but don't think like that. Realize instead: YOU MAY SUCCEED. All you need is ONE 'break' and that big break could be TOMORROW if you just give it 1 more try. :)"

Well, I wanted to expand on this a little bit. Cause it applies to everything: to your career; to your dreams; to love; to friendship; to everything.

This has been an interesting year for me (thinking about all that has happened since last Valentine's Day).

On one hand, it's been one filled with accomplishment: helped out in Haiti as an EMT; finished law school; earned my MBA in finance; shot 'my' feature film; became an attorney; fulfilled my dream of working retail (no joke, I worked at JCrew over the holidays on the sales floor); and I finished and released my first full-length music album.

On the other hand, it's been one filled with terrible depression and emotional trauma. One of the most debilitating was the fear that all that I've accomplished has been meaningless---that no matter what I do, nothing is going to be as successful as I would like. My fear that my feature film will not get worldwide mass distribution; that my law firm will not make me millions; that my album will not go platinum; that I will never find a girlfriend----four times this year I have fallen head over heels for a girl, only to have my heart broken each time. Wa wa wa! :)

I was thinking this same 'broken record' train of thought again tonight. That's why I posted that message on Facebook. It was my own pep talk to myself. Because ya know... maybe this year, everything DOES come together. Maybe the music videos I am shooting over the next few months for my album are actually going to go viral like Justin Bieber. Maybe! And maybe this horror film we did that is nearly completely edited is actually going to get into theaters. Maybe! And maybe this year, all the hard work I have put in over the last 12 years, all comes together. Maybe!

I know how hard it is to keep going when it seems the entire world is against you. How do I know? I know because this is how I feel every waking moment. Yo Unstoppable One,

Okay, so this last year has been really bad (in some ways) and halfway decent (in other ways). It seems we've had all had a tremendously difficult year and yet, we also accomplished some cool things, right? But the miserable memory of 2010 still lingers in all of our brains.

But here's the thing: forget the past. It's over. Learn from it, and move on. What's done is done. I'm not writing this email to talk about 2010. 2010 is done with. I am writing this email to inspire you to kick some ass in 2011.

Usually I send out this email on New Year's Eve, but this year, a) I had a really bad new years, and b) I couldn't think of what I wanted to say. I've been trying and trying to figure out what I could say this year to inspire my awesome reader (that's YOU). I have had writer's block for weeks.

Until tonight.

I was going through some old emails and found an email I sent out last year, on January 2, 2010. About Steve Martin. I read it, and my gosh, my spirits rose so much. I smiled the whole time I read it, and the more I read, the wider my smile became.

I thought, "Oh wow, this is good stuff. This is inspiring ME baby!"

And then, it hit me: I need to send out exactly the same thing tonight to my list. And let me tell you--wherever you are in life, and whatever you are doing, take heart from the message that follows. It applies to virtually anything you can think of.

So, without further ado, I present to you, "A Lesson In Determination From Steve Martin"

Yo Unstoppable One!

I recently finished reading Steve Martin's stand-up comedy autobiography, "Born Standing Up". Three stories from the book resonated with me so strongly that I wanted to share them with you, along with my 'take' on each one.

Now, in the book, Steve Martin started out as a struggling magician and standup comic, and eventually scored a gig as a television comedy writer to pay the bills.

He writes on page 127, "I was growing frustrated with writing for television. Although the income was financing my performance career, I was marking time, and the prize of performing regularly on one of the shows was not materializing. I realized that the performers were just using my material as a starting point and, of course, I thought the better joke was to do it as written. On The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, I was thrown the occasional performing bone, appearing as a walk-on with a line or two in a sketh, but I felt no resonance from the producers or audience. There was a baffling moment when Sonny Bono and his partner, Denis Pregnolato, who were becoming showbiz entrepreneurs, approached me at work and took me aside. Sonny and Denis had seen me perform--I don't know where--and Sonny said, "Steve, we've been watching you. We think you are the next big thing, bigger than David Brenner, bigger than Albert Brooks. We would like to work with you and develop a show for you." I nodded my excitement and never heard from them again, not one word." -- Steve Martin

QUESTION: How many of you have been in a similar situation before? A situation where you think all your hard work is finally going to pay off, and finally, you are going to be justly rewarded for all your sacrifice only to have the rug pulled out from under you? I am willing to be ALL OF YOU. How absolutely heartbreaking to get all jazzed up about your future, and then just have it fizzle away, your hope fading with every subsequent day of silence.

LESSON? This has happened to me so many times. Countless times. And it truly IS heartbreaking. I have cried many a tear at the unjustness of the world. And yet, look at Steve Martin: need I remind you that he is now a movie star making millions of dollars per film? Obviously, he did not need Sonny and Denis to make it big. Obviously, there are many ways to the top. Obviously, you can not let anything get you down. Persistence, ladies and gents, is the name of the game. And perhaps the world is NOT so unjust... for those who persist; for those who get back up again when they fall; for those who don't let rejection destroy their faith in success.

But there's more! Later, Steve was doing really well. He had appeared FIFTEEN TIMES as a standup comic on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He appeared for the SIXTEENTH TIME, and this time, not with a guest host, but with Johnny Carson himself. This was big.

He writes on page 152, "My first show back, I chose to do a bit I had developed years earlier at the Ice House... I started a wild flail, which I must say was pretty funny, when a showbiz miracle had occurred. The camera cut away to a dimly lit Johnny, precisely as he whirled up from his chair, doubling over with laughter. Suddenly, subliminally, I was endorsed. At the end of the act, Sammy [Davis Jr] came over and hugged me. I felt like I hadn't been hugged since I was born. This was my 16th appearance on the show, and the first one I could really can a smash. The next day, elated by my success, I walked into an antique store on La Brea. The woman behind the counter looked at me. "Are you that boy who was on the Tonight Show last night?" "Yes," I said. "Yuck!" she blurted out.

QUESTION: How many of you have had a great success, only to have someone criticize you? How dare they? Who do they think they are? Well, they are human, just like us all, and I suppose entitled to their opinion. Nonetheless, when I first saw people trashing me on my IMDb.com message board, I was crushed too. But crushed only until I realized that the only reason they are trashing me is because I must be gaining some fame. Why would people criticize someone they don't even know? The answer: because I was not a 'someone'; I was a 'commodity'. They are not seeing Monroe Mann, the person, they were seeing Monroe Mann, the up and coming celebrity. Same with this comment made to Steve after his awesome performance on the Tonight Show. Bottom line, don't let the critics get you down---the more of them you have, the closer you are to getting to the top of wherever you're going.

And... there's one last story.

Now, Steve had performed 16 times now on the Tonight Show. That is amazing. Would anyone dare to say that he wasn't a success? That he had not yet already 'made it'? SIXTEEN TIMES! Wow! Wow! Wow!

Well, on page 156, right after finishing up his Tonight Show story, Steve writes, "I did have a tiny bit of drawing power, generated through my daytime appearances and my growing presence on The Tonight Show, but mostly my name was a rumor. My dubious status as a headliner led me to a tiny pie slice of folk club in Greenwich Village, the Metro. Now I had an opening act. Still, no one showed up to see me and a new duo, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. I told the club owner that he could let me go if he wanted, that I wouldn't hold him to his contract. He said he wanted me to stay... until the next night, when again no one showed up. We parted with a handshake."

QUESTION: How many of you have had a great success, and felt that finally, things were changing, only to discover that in reality, not much had changed at all?

LESSON: If you have felt that feeling, and Lord knows I have, and Lord knows Steve Martin has, then guess what: you're in good company! Can you believe that even after 16 appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Steve couldn't even fill a tiny club in Greenwich Village?! Humbling, isn't it? The lesson I learned from this--keep going. No matter what. And realize that it's very unlikely that any one thing is going to launch you to the top. You need to take every victory collectively, and be steadfast in your forward motion. At the time, Steve thought he was a washup. But guess what? He kept pushing, and soon, the word about this great comic spread, and he was playing to crowds of 500, then 1000, then 2000, and then, 6000 as HOST OF SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. And he didn't stop there, because soon, he was playing to sold out crowds of over SIXTY THOUSAND PEOPLE.

The final lesson I learned from Steve's story is that you may need to have lots of 'victories' before the world takes notice on a grand scale. Years ago, I wrote a book with Jay Conrad Levinson called Guerrilla Networking and was invited as a guest on CNBC's The Big Idea. I thought that was going to be 'it'. It wasn't. It helped, yes, but I am still a relative unknown. Before that, I was on The Dr. Keith Show. That too yielded very little tangible benefits. Years before that, my band made it to the semi-finals of a Z100 battle of the bands contest. I thought that would yield big results. It didn't. Years before that, I was in this big Hollywood movie, Swimfan. I thought THAT was going to be it. Nope. And I keep going. Just recently, I released my new book, Time Zen; am finishing up my last semester of law school; and am editing my Iraq war comedy documentary. Will any of these be 'it'? I doubt it, BUT I know that with every 'feather in my cap' I am getting closer, and closer, and closer. I've learned over the years (and have been reminded by Steve Martin's story) that there is no such thing as an overnight success. It's gonna take years and years and struggle after struggle and--ironically--success after success before you become an overnight success.

In other words: KEEP GOING.

Said differently, and in but one word? DETERMINATION.

In conclusion, what am I trying to say? I am trying to let you know that you haven't even done a quarter of the work you need to be doing to get to the top. What have you done that can even come close to 16 appearances on the Tonight Show? Heck, even if you HAVE had 16 appearances, guess what? Who cares?! Obviously those 16 appearances weren't even enough for Steve Martin. My point: don't get cocky. Don't get lazy. Don't get complacent. DON'T GIVE UP. You have so much more work to do. My advice to you? GET OFF YOUR ASS.

One last thing. Here is your 2011 checklist. Are you ready to make 2011 your most productive year ever? Print out this checklist and make your dreams come true already! This checklist is derived in part from my new book, "TIME ZEN", from my book, "GUERRILLA NETWORKING", from my book "BATTLE CRIES FOR THE UNDERDOG", and my book, "THE THEATRICAL JUGGERNAUT", and from my law school/MBA education as well as some big screw ups I made this year, haha.

YOUR 2011 CHECKLIST

[ ] DREAM BIG -- Make a list of everything you have ever wanted to do with your life. Don't edit. Just write everything--no matter how crazy it may seem. Do this before New Year's Day.

[ ] SYNERGIZE -- Figure out which of these projects you can combine, i.e. if you write down "cooking", "write a screenplay", and "spend more time with kids", why don't you write a screenplay about a kids cooking academy, and spend time with the kids cooking the recipes that you're going to include in the screenplay. SYNERGY BABY (which is a key tenet of my book, "Time Zen")

[ ] CREATE A PLAN -- Write out all the steps you need to take to make those dreams come true. Figure out which steps you can accomplish within two years. Make that your strive for THIS YEAR.

[ ] CREATE SOME TO DO LISTS -- Nothing of great magnitude gets done without a checklist. Just as you are using this checklist to figure out what to get done this year, you should also use a checklist to help you figure out what must be done over the next month.

[ ] STRIVES, NOT GOALS -- Don't kick yourself if you don't get things done exactly at the time you expected they would get done. Don't think of inflexible goals; think always of very flexibly adaptable strives.

[ ] DREAM BIGGER -- Stop editing yourself! Make a new list of dreams, and this time, put down the absolute crazy dreams! The really outlandish ones: *astronaut, *movie star, *president of the United States ---- I kid you not, you can do anything you set your mind to. People who say that is not true just didn't try hard enough, and gave up before they found their solution. GET OFF YOUR ASS ALREADY

[ ] HELP SOMEONE ELSE -- Seems crazy, but the more you help others, the more you end up on the receiving end of help from others. What goes around comes around, they say. Spend some time each week helping someone else, and you might just find that things start working out better in your world too.

[ ] SAY THANK YOU -- You know that feeling of not being appreciated? Well, don't be one of those people who is making people feel underappreciated! SAY THANK YOU DAMMIT! Say thank you to everyone and anyone who helps you in the slightest of ways. It costs nothing, and can mean everything (so thank YOU for reading this newsletter, and an even bigger thanks if you forward it along to a friend!)

[ ] WRITE A BOOK -- I honestly believe that everyone should be a published author. The feeling you get when the first copy of a book you wrote arrives on your doorstep, and you tear open the box from Amazon, and you see your name in print, and you flip through the book---that feeling can't be beat. The adrenaline rush is just indescribable. I want you to have that feeling too (and yes, I can help you with that if you like)

[ ] GET OFF YOUR ASS -- bottom line, we all have dreams. Most of us just hide them away in the shadow of a secure job and a 'play it safe' mentality. WAKE UP OUT OF YOUR STUPOR! Rekindle those dreams. Live the life you always knew you should be living. I would rather die trying than live under the pestering answers of 'what if' I had tried'? In fact, I have an even better idea---don't try. DO IT!

[ ] GET IT IN WRITING -- As Samuel Goldwyn once said, "An oral contract is worth the paper it's printed on." Make sure that this is the year you get EVERYTHING in writing. You are not 'delaying'; you are being smart. And this applies to a LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT too. If you have a home, or a significant amount of property, and/or children, you should have a will, a living will, and a power of attorney.

[ ] BE PATIENT/DON'T BE TOO IMPULSIVE -- Patience means "being steadfast despite opposition". I made a big mistake though by being TOO steadfast, i.e. I was so impulsive, and failed to control myself, and really screwed up a really amazing opportunity. I am still waiting by the phone hoping that it's going to ring with good news, but I fear I can only live and learn. Please use some self-control in 2011. That is probably my number one new year's resolution: CONTROL YOURSELF MONROE. I made some really bad judgment calls and ended up doing a lot of things I regret--some in my personal life; some in my business life. Altogether, I think I have finally learned my lesson. It reminded me of a great quote by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, "Self-reverance, self-knowledge, self-control--these three alone lead to sovereign power."

[ ] DON'T BE SILENT -- Finally, if someone has a major crush on you, even if you are not interested, tell them where they stand. Be honest. Be brutally honest. Coming from someone who just started a PhD in Psychology, take note: Believe it or not, being brutally honest with someone is less damaging psychologically in the long run than 'beating around the bush' and ignoring the person. It's easier to get over someone/something if you have a definite answer, rather than not knowing. And tell them in person. Or at the very least, over the phone. Not via text or email! Last year, I thought that a broken heart was the worst feeling one could ever have; now I know that it's not a broken heart; it's the feeling of not knowing why someone with whom you had a strong connection suddenly won't respond to your phone calls or text messages. Please folks: be honest with the people in your life. You're not helping them by telling a white lie. You're certainly not helping them by ignoring them. At least show them that tiny bit of respect and tell them where they stand. Remember how Steve Martin felt when Sonny Bono never got back to him; not cool.

Anyway, I come up with a lot of quotations. Here's one that is completely appropriate to conclude this inspirational diatribe:

"How do you know when you've given it your all? WHEN YOU HAVE SUCCEEDED."

On that note, I know you may be bummed out right now. (In many ways, I sure am.) I know 2010 may not have been what you had hoped. (in many ways, it was not for me.) I know that not everything may have worked out for you. (ditto ditto ditto)

My simple advice: Learn your lessons well, and go out there and kick some butt in 2011. And don't make the same mistakes again!! I sure won't. Neither will you.

All I have to say is that persistence pays off. Yeah, okay, granted, persistence takes a really long time, but... it does have its upsides. Here are a few cases in point:

A) I'M NOW A LAWYER! Yes, folks, you now know an attorney by the name of Monroe Mann. After 3 years of intense study, I graduated law school in May, passed the NY/NJ bar exams last month, and was just admitted as an attorney in New Jersey a few weeks ago. I expect to be admitted to the state of NY as an attorney in mid/late January as well. And finally, I'm registered to take the California bar exam in February out in Los Angeles and am finishing up my LLM in commercial real estate law. Bottom line: if you have any legal matters, feel free to bring 'em to me. I'd be happy to assist you however I can. Yo Monroe,

Greetings from the state of Maine! I'm writing tonight from the set of my feature film, "You Can't Kill Stephen King" (AKA Shush or Die). It seems like ages since I have written to you folks, and I thought now would be an appropriate time to share some inspiration, and to share a little about that latest in my world. As always, remember, I'm not bragging... I'm just sharing the vibe baby.

To start with, here's a quick lesson in persistence for you. Back in 1994, I starred in the play Equus, playing the role of Alan Strang. I was 17 years old. I received (according to the local newspapers) "A standing ovation on stilts to young Monroe Mann, who totally amazing performance belies the fact that this is only his 3rd production, the other two being school plays." That play and those reviews determined my future: I wanted to act. And more than that, I wanted to be a movie star. To star in a feature film. That was 16 years ago.

How did it all play out? Completely unlike how I planned. And yet, in many ways, even better.

16 years later, I am writing to you from the set of a feature film. I co-wrote the script. Am producing it. Am co-directing it. And... I play one of the two male leads. In the words of Matt Damon in a nice Boston accent: "How do you like them apples?"

Truly, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I am doing it!   Or rather... I DID IT! I am starring in a feature film! Pretty surreal. Gotta say.

What did it take to get here? Oh, now that's where it gets interesting. Let's see: I probably went on over 200 auditions and callbacks over the years. I got to a final callback to be Michelle Pfiefer's son in "Deep End of the Ocean"--didn't get cast. I almost got my band signed to Atlantic Records--didn't get signed.   I did get cast in Swimfan... but... that led no where. I wrote a romantic comedy about wakeboarding, "In the Wake", found my $5 million investor, got every pro wakeboarder on board, and every wakeboard manufacturer, and was ready to start shooting. A reality show about my rock band, "Running For Famous" was also in the works with the producers of "Trading Spaces". And then? I got deployed to Iraq with the Army. My film fell apart. The tv show fell apart. My band fell apart. My business fell apart. I then spent a year in a combat zone. A very long anxiety ridden year. I got back, and tried to put things back together. Try as I did, my wakeboarding film just never got back the momentum. But I did end up writing a few more books, and getting onto the college speaking circuit. I met a fellow author/speaker Peter Bielagus. In 2006, I joined Bielagus at Book Expo America in NYC. He introduced me to some standup comic dude named Ronnie Khalil. Who would have thought that the following weekend, my friend Graham would bail out on me on my trip to Maine. Who would have thought that none of my other friends could take his place. Who would have thought I would end up calling up this guy Ronnie on an awkward whim and inviting him away for a nice quiet weekend at the lake. haha. well, I did, and we did. And that weekend, he and I wrote a horror comedy script about Stephen King.   We did it because we were bored and it was raining. And we happened to have a copy of Final Draft with us. Who would have thought that over the next 4 years, he and I would stay in touch and continue refining the script, and bring on a 3rd writer (stephen king expert Bob Madia), and that I would end up getting a Masters of Entrepreneurship, and an MBA, and a law degree, and going to film school, and then starting my OWN film school, and then put it all to good use by raising money for the film, and putting together a team (with Ronnie's help) to actually shoot the film, and end up actually making that film come to life?

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT I WOULD BE WRITING THIS EMAIL TO YOU FROM THE SET OF THAT VERY FILM? And that we'd be getting interviewed by channel 6 news, Portland Press Herald, Conway Daily Sun, Fangoria Magazine, and the list goes on? That the feature film I would end up starring in would be one I wrote, produced, and directed? That I would actually end up having a conversation with Stephen King himself about the film I am shooting about him that I co-wrote? Um, craziness!

What's the point of all this? The point is that no matter what, do NOT let your dreams die. No matter how long it takes. No matter how much you may have to sacrifice. I have sacrificed so much for the sake of my dreams. Many say to me, "Dude, you are running yourself ragged in pursuit of these dreams." They say it out of concern---but out of their concern for what they think is best for me; not about what is truly best for me. For me, all we have are our dreams, and as soon as you give up on them, or worse, COMPROMISE or SETTLE ---- whether it's a dream job, a dream girl/guy, or a Barbie dream house --- that's when your soul begins to die. Yeah, it is undeniable that I have given up a lot to get where I am. But hey, I guess for me, it was worth it. I have done what 95% of wannabes in showbiz never do: star in a feature film; direct a feature film; fulfill the dream you once set for yourself.

So my advice to you? Don't let the spark die. Keep up the perseverance. If what you are doing now is not working, figure some other way to get to where you want (or need) to be.  If the dream is worth it, I assure you, compeltely and without any hesitation: YOU WILL GET WHERE YOU INTEND TO GO>

It took some reminders from a few friends to help me realize that MY DREAM HAS COME TRUE. I am starring in a full length movie. When I sat back and actually realize that I had done it---that I am actually doign what I once set out to do when I was 17 years old, only one word came to mind: H O O A H.

IN OTHER NEWS:

* FILM UPDATES: So yeah, the film shoot is going great. We've been shooting for about 15 days, and have another 7 or so to go. And it looks really really good. Amazing footage, actors, and performances. In the words of our DP/Co-director Jorge Valdes-Iga... "HOTNESS!" After this film, I am directing/producing another comedy feature I wrote entitled, "Outtakes", and continuing the development of my wakeboarding feature, "In the Wake"

* BAND UPDATE: My band is finishing up our latest album, and is in the midst of a name change. Formerly "Running for Famous" and "Monroe Mann & the Ass Kickers", I'm trying to decide between "Polymath", "The Polymaths", or just "Monroe Mann" If you don't know what a polymath is... look it up. :) We should have the full album done with 15 songs in mid October, and up on iTunes and Rhapsody and all that. If you want to see us play live, we have some upcoming shows planned at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn as well as Sidewalk Cafe in Manhattan. Potentially good news: Dave Matthews record label asked me to send them the CD when it's done. Hmmm... More to come....

* LAW: Yeah baby, I graduated with my MBA and Juris Doctor degree two months ago, and took the NJ and NY bar exams (BARF!) this past July. I have to wait until November until I find out if I passed, and even then, I'd have to wait a few months before I actually get my law license. so, in the meantime (I know, I'm crazy), I have enrolled in a post graduate law program (an LLM, i.e. Masters of Law) in Commercial Real Estate investment and development. That starts September 2nd, one day after we wrap shooting this film here in Maine. And finally, I am beginning the transition of Unstoppable Artists (my consulting firm) into an entertainment law firm. More to come on that in the months to come.

* BOOKS: My book Guerrilla Networking (with co-author Jay Conrad Levinson) is now stocked in most Barnes & Noble stores across the country. That's super exciting. I am working on a new book now called, "T.R.U.S.T.", which is a book on how to successfully raise money for projects. The TRUST acronym stands for: Track Record, Return on Investment, Unique Investment Opportunity, Systems, and Team. If you've been trying to raise money for film, music, or other projects or businesses, this is the book for you. And if you haven't yet, I hope you'll check out my other books on Amazon and BN.com, particularly The Theatrical Juggernaut and Time Zen.

* SPEAKING: By popular demand, I have been invited to again speak (for the 7th time) at AFTRA in Manhattan this fall, so stay tuned for which Tuesday that will be. I'm also stoked to report that my Swiss alma mater, Franklin College, in Lugano, Switzerland, has asked me to give a speech at an upcoming New York City alumni party. Molto bene! Sono molto contento! :) I also have another speech pending at Writer's Guild, Drama Book Shop, and at a local high school in the city.

* SOME CLIENT UPDATES: My client Jesse Fahay just finished writing her first book, "Which Method" which outlines the four major acting methods performers can use--it'll be published in a month or two.  Anne Marie Stefani, one of the NY Jets Flight Crew dancers, was in Maxim again. Jeff Goldstein's screenplay, "Knock 3 Times" is now a quarterfinalist in a number of screenplay competitions. Arthur Brown just shot a scene in the soon to be blockbuster, "You Can't Kill Stephen King". If any of you need help with your artistic or business pursuits---hire me! I'm here to help you get where you need to go.

* OTHER RANDOM STUFF: I am now a PADI rescue diver and am starting my Divemaster certification this fall with Empire Divers in Manhattan. My little sister is getting married this september.  I landed a full heelside 360 on a wakeboard! I actually saved someone from drowning last week in the lake, and feel really great knowing I was there to help. I love my mom.

FYI, for those wondering what the big job interview was... still can't tell you because I have to go back in February for another interview. If anything comes of it, I'll let you know. :)

Monroe is the smartest investment I have ever made. My few months of knowing him have turned my wheels faster than any coaching system. He makes sure that every task you complete has a specific purpose and helps you to make every second of every day count! A. I'M SPEAKING AT AFTRA TOMORROW NIGHT, TUESDAY, MARCH 16th

For those rockin' individuals who live in the tri-state, come get motivated and intellectually challenged at my 2-hour seminar ("Producing Your Own Projects") tomorrow, Tuesday, at AFTRA in Manhattan. For those who don't know, AFTRA is short for the "American Federation of Television and Radio Artists". Really cool organization (of which I am a member). If you want to learn the ten steps to successfully producing a film or television project, stop on by at 6PM tomorrow, AFTRA HQs on Madison Avenue. You'll learn why the script is the most important part; why most people can't seem to ever raise the money they need to shoot their projects; why the smartest actors are PRODUCING actors; and so much more.

FYI, those that come are invited to an 'after party' of sorts. It's my tradition to invite anyone who wants to continue the conversation and meet fellow actors, writers, producers, and announcers for a bite to eat/drink afterwards. Here's are two inspiring excerpts, "5 Minutes or Bust" and "Winners Do It Now":

5 MINUTES OR BUST

But we're not done yet. The next key is to make sure that no single item on your daily to-do list will take more than 5 minutes of your time. Sounds weird, right? Stay with me.

The reason why most people don't get as much done as they would like during each day is because the tasks they ask of themselves ARE WAY TOO BIG AND UNWIELDY! For instance, you cannot, "Wash the car," in ten minutes; or "Write a book," or "Buy a house."—and yet how many of us put large tasks like that on our to-do lists? You can't do those tasks in five minutes, but in that same time frame, you most certainly can, "Fill up bucket with water," or "Come up with five potential book ideas," or "Look in the newspaper for local real estate that's for sale." Does that make sense? The latter group of tasks are far more likely to get done. And why? Because they are doable—they are not overwhelming.

So you see, the key to a well constructed daily to-do list is not just that it is based on a ten-year plan. That's only part of it. The other part is to ensure that every task on your daily to-do list is easy enough for you to wrap your head around. It may sound silly, but I sometimes find things on my list such as, "Drive to gas station," "Choose a new book to read from the bookshelf," and "brush teeth." Those tasks get done. As opposed to, "Get ready for trip," "Become more educated," and "Get ready for bed,"—which I just don't have time for. But when I break down each task into something I can do in less than five minutes—it's truly amazing how much I can get done, simply because I realize that I 'have the time'. Another way of doing this is breaking your to-do list down into 5-minute subcategories. In other words, you list the major task, and break it down into its subordinate 5-minute tasks, i.e.

[ ] Wash Car

-Buy bucket at home depot

-Cancel appointments on Saturday

-Pick out old clothing to wear for the task

-Drive car down driveway into back yard

Make sense? In this way, you have all of the component tasks broken down. Now, even if you just drive the car around back and pick out the clothing for the job, you know that you are making progress. You can check off those two tasks, and feel good knowing that you are getting very close to washing the car.

Why does this work? Simple: we often have a poor conception of time. We think something is going to take us an hour, when in actuality, it would only take us ten minutes. But we never get started because we think it will take us an hour, and we don't have an hour. By breaking down everything you do into five-minute tasks, you often end up getting a lot more accomplished in an hour than you normally would because you help your brain realize that you actually do have the time. While no one has a free hour, we all have 5 minutes to spare. And this leads to my next point: Winners do it now!™

WINNERS DO IT NOW!™

Look, it's all nice and good if we all can find five minutes to spare, but who cares if we have five minutes to spare if we don't do what we're supposed to be doing during those five minutes? Makes sense, right?

So… do it now! DO IT NOW DAMMIT!

This is the most basic and fundamental time management technique on the planet. And it is so simple that most people will think it's too simple to actually have any impact on their productivity. But mark my words: if you take no other advice from this book, take this advice: DO IT NOW. Don't think. Just: DO IT NOW. It will turn your life around.

When to do it? DO IT NOW! Now does not mean tomorrow. Now doesn't even mean 'in five minutes'. 'Do it now' means just that: NOW! As in, "Stop thinking about it, and start doing it!" IMMEDIATELY DAMMIT! Why are you still reading?

Right at this very moment, think about something you know you should be doing, but you are putting off. Here's my magical advice: stop reading this book, for a moment, and do what you know you are supposed to be doing! My gosh, doesn't this make such logical sense? Becoming better at time management is as simple as making one simple change in your life: Learn how to do it now. Do it now. DO IT NOW. DO IT NOW! GET OFF YOUR LAZY PROCRASTINATING ASS AND DO IT NOW ALREADY!!!!

Imagine a cross between a Tony Robbins seminar and a Dave Matthews/Green Day concert. Yeah, pretty awesome. The three shows are scheduled for the last week of April, and the first two weeks of May. Stay tuned for specific dates and times!

2. MORE SEMINARS! I'm gonna be teaching two seminars regularly at 36 Street Studios starting next month. One will be basic career management for actors and musicians. The other will be advanced career management for actors and musicians. Stay tuned!

3. AFTRA IN JUNE: I've been asked to return to AFTRA in June to teach another seminar. Details forthcoming.

4. PUBLISHING SCHOOL. You know what? I believe that EVERYONE should write and publish a book. Why? Because it is so damn cool, and talk about a great conversation starter: "So what are you up to?" "Oh I just published a book. You can find it on Amazon and BN.com" That breeds interest from ANYONE. 5. CASTING FOR MY FILM, "THE QUIET". Yes, ladies and gents. The casting for our SAG horror film, "The Quiet" is starting soon. Probably in early May. Stay on this email list for all of the details.

E. DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DREAMS, AND DECISIONS

I am at an incredible crossroads in my life. I am in a very strange and (ironically) difficult position: I am being forced to choose between two different dreams. As my mom always says, "Rejoice Rejoice You Have No Choice!" But here, I do have a choice, and it's a HUGE choice. This decision could impact the very trajectory of my life irrevocably.

On one hand, I am nearly done with law school. 6 more weeks to be precise. I have finished my coursework for my MBA. I take the bar this summer. My horror film is going into production this summer. I have honed my business and marketing skills to such an extent that I know exactly what I need to successfully finish my climb to the top of Hollywood. If I just continue moving forward... I am assured success. I don't think I'll get there; I KNOW IT. But only if I continue on the same path that I am currently traveling on.

On the other hand, a dream of mine that I had ever since I was 21 years old---a dream that I thought was gone, dead, and never to be revived--suddenly reared its beautifully ugly head. And it's moving forward at full speed.

This is all good news, right? Well, not really. The reality is that I am being forced to choose. If I choose Hollywood, I am quite certain I'll get where I'm heading, but will I always regret turning my back on this secondary dream? If I choose this other path---which would take a minimum of three years of my life---it would require me to shut down all my businesses and get out of showbiz completely. And while I am confident I could regain my current momentum, I would have to abandon showbiz for three years, and I don't know if I can handle that again after my (wonderful) experience in Iraq.

What's my point? My point is that I don't think I have to choose between dreams. I think giving up one dream to pursue another is a cop out. STANDARDS, NO COMPROMISE PEOPLE! So I am plotting feverishly a way to ensure that on my deathbed, I can say, "I made both dreams come true."

Is this going to be easy? No. It's probably in fact going to be very painful in some ways. And it is going to require a hell of a lot of work. But ya know what: I DO NOT TAKE MY DREAMS LIGHTLY, AND MY DREAMS ARE WORTH IT!!!

The big question is: are yours?

F. BATTLE CRY # 52 (Ayn Rand)

This is an excerpt from the book, "Battle Cries for the Underdog" by Monroe Mann

BATTLE CRY: "Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won. It exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours." - AYN RAND

FIGHTIN' WORDS "First, if you haven't yet read the book Anthem by Ayn Rand... go out and read it right now--it'll give you goosebumps. Second, think back to your childhood. All of us have at some point wanted to be the superhero, or the war hero, or even just the neighborhood hero. Unfortunately, at some point between our childhood and adulthood, the word 'hero' merely became a term for a sandwich (and for some people, the word 'hero' doesn't even mean sandwich). I'm urging you to find that original meaning of the word 'hero', and to once again discover your childhood yearning to be someone amazing. Rediscover that hero you always wanted to be. For you ARE that hero. You have everything within you to be that hero right here, right now; to be what you always knew you could and should be. And becoming what you always knew you could and should be is certainly a battle worth sacrificing everything for. Isn't it? Is so, go forth and propser. If not, where exactly are your priorities?" - MONROE MANN

G. LATEST NEWS FROM THE ROMANN EMPIRE & LOCO DAWN FILMS, LLC

And finally, here are some cool things going on in my life right now that I wanted to share with you:

1) Haiti Pictures -- I posted all of my Haiti pics on my Facebook profile. If you're not my friend yet, friend me!

2) New Awesome Job! -- I'm super stoked to report that out of 25 applicants, 17 of whom were native French speakers, I was the one On Locations Tours chose to be their very first French-speaking tour guide for French tourists on a 'movie bus tour' of Manhattan. In other language news, I have restarted my studies of Chinese, Arabic, Italian, and German. Ahh, feels so great.

3) Swing Lesson! -- Yay, I am dancing again. I have started intermediate swing dance lessons again at Dance Manhattan. It is so great to once again be on the dance floor.

4) CFP -- I am finally approaching the end of my CFP (Certified Financial Planner) studies at BU's Boston Institute of Finance. I should be taking the CFP exam in November.

5) BAR EXAM! -- Hard to believe, but I am but 6 weeks from graduating law school. I just registered for the NJ bar exam, and will be registering for the NY bar exam in April. Bring it on!!

6) SCUBA INSTRUCTOR -- Finally! I have begun my training to progess from a PADI Rescue Diver to a PADI Divemaster. Divemaster is the first 'professional' scuba diver level, and the first 'instructor' level. I'll be getting certified through Empire Divers in Manhattan. Check this out: I just found out the owner, Cliff, is also... an attorney! So needless to say, we hit it off immediately. ROMP ON!

MY INSPIRATIONAL CHRISTMAS GIFT TO YOU

Yo Unstoppable One,

First off, Merry Christmas and all that jazz. Jesus rocks. :)

What's my gift to you? It is not something tangible. It is not something physical. It is something far more important than that. The gift that I offer to you is something called HOPE. Hope. Faith. Confidence.

I wrote a new song yesterday called, "Keep the Promise". The chorus reads, "Keep the promise that you kept." In other words, keep the promise to yourself that I KNOW you kept within your heart and soul all these years.

So many people tell me that they 'gave up' on their dream without an ounce of regret. That after years of pursuing something so clearly part of them, they could just 'give it up' and move on as if that yearning just disappeared. I DON'T THINK SO.

Consider this analogy. Let's say you find a guy/girl that you really dig. You're attracted. You pursue. You court. You... GET YOUR HEART BROKEN. You realize it's never going to work out with this person. Honestly, in this situation, sometimes it does make sense to give up... but on the person; NOT on the dream of finding true love and being happy.

My point is that it's the same with your dreams. Your crazy childhood dreams. Your crazy yesteryear dreams. Your crazy TODAY dreams that you are losing faith in. Give up on a particular route, but not on the trip! Give up on a particular opportunity, but not the dream!

My advice to you this Christmas season? Do not lose your faith. Do not lose faith in your future; do not lose faith in your dreams; don't you DARE lose faith in yourself.

2010 is right around the corner. A new year. A new possibility. An opportunity for you to rekindle your dreams--and I mean those big huge wildly outlandish dreams that everyone else laughs at---yeah, THOSE dreams-- and dust them off, put them on, and wear them proudly, publicly, and rebelliouslessly baby!

Life does not always work out the way we want. Nor does it often work out on exactly the timeline we imagine. But that doesn't mean that you have to give up on your dreams. NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS. Perhaps your pursuit of them slows down slightly, and that's okay, but NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS. Perhaps you change the dream slightly, and that's okay, but NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS. Perhaps your dream should even be getting bigger! Yes, BIGGER! With every failure, make the dream bigger; not smaller!!!

I just saw the film, "A Star is Born" with Judy Garland and James Mason. Here is an excerpt, which I actually spent ten minutes copying down using the play and pause buttons:

ESTHER: Don't you realize that I would be giving up everything I ever worked for?
NORMAN: Yes, but it's served it's purpose. A career is a curious thing. Talent isn't always enough. You need a sense of timing; an eye for seeing the turning points; for recognizing the big chance when it comes along and grabbing it. A career can rest on a trifle, like us sitting here tonight. Or it can turn on someone saying to you, "You're better than that; you're better than you know." Don't settle for the little dream. Go on to the big dream.

Bottom line, I want you to be 95 years old and look back and think, "I always knew I could do it... and that's why I did it." Lately, I've realized that a large part of my mental psychosis is because of my ambition. Or rather, my inability to say 'no' to my ambition. But even more recently, I realized something else. It's not my ambition that drives me crazy. It's the fact that I know that I have the ability to realize my ambition. You see, ambition alone is harmless. It's only when you couple it with knowledge that the ambition can be realized that you run into 'trouble'. It's ironic that I say 'trouble', because it's this two-sided coin (ambition plus the knowledge of my ability to realize my ambition) that has allowed me to do all that I have, and all that I know I am destined to do. Go figure.

Did you read that third to last word? DESTINED. That's how deluded you need to be. I actually believe I am destined to do the things that I do. That I am destined to be great. To change the world. That is how strong the faith in my abilities and ambition is. More importantly, that is how strong the faith in YOUR abilities and ambition need to be.

I am here to tell you right now that you have your particular dreams for a reason. They didn't just appear by mere chance. They appeared because THAT IS YOUR DESTINY.

My Christmas gift to you is more than just faith and hope. It is more than that. I am giving you the confidence to know that your dreams are acceptable and commendable. I am giving you the confidence to know that your ambition is acceptable and commendable. I am giving you the confidence to know that you have the strength and ability within you to succeed. To thrive. To prosper. To see those dreams come true before your very eyes.

No matter who you are. No matter where you live. No matter what your dream. No matter how much money you don't have. No matter how many excuses you try to come up with... YOU KNOW IN YOUR HEART WHAT YOU ARE DESTINED TO DO. So I am here merely to gently remind you to...

DO IT DAMMIT!

Get off your ass and live the life you know you are meant to be living!

I hope you had (and are HAVING) an AWESOME labor day weekend! You deserve a day off!

But seriously...

I. MY DEFINITION OF LABOR DAY

Labor Day (Noun) - 8 months after New Years when you finally realize you have not been doing as much as you thought you would, typically associated with a rekindling of your inner flame and a resolve to KICK SOME ASS AND STOP BEING SO LAZY during the last 4 months of the year.

So without further ado, will you please GET OFF YOUR ASS and make your dreams come true already?

II. I NOW GO BY THE NAME... PROFESSOR.

For about four years, I have unsuccessfully been applying to higher ed in an effort to become an adjunct professor. Every semester I would receive the same response: no vacancies. Ugh!

But what goes around comes around as they say.

First, about 4 years ago, I decided to become a member of the big brother big sister program. I became the big brother to a freshman in high school whose mother doesn't care for him and whose father is less than an ideal role model. He lives with his grandma, and has no father figure/big bro in his life. So I became that for him. I took him to the bronx zoo. We went to Playland together. Even today, as he begins his first semester at Westchester Community College (WCC), we go out and see a movie together maybe once a month. But I am getting ahead of myself.

Second, I resolved to continue to pursue my education and continue to accomplish cool things until I finally got hired. Enter: MBA, Law School, Masters of Entrepreneuship, writing books, giving speeches, etc. Sure, part of all that was an end in and of itself---it made me cooler and more successful--but it also made me more desirable to schools.

Now, about two months ago, my little bro Mike asked if I would take him to WCC to help him register for classes. I said sure. Little did I know that I would end up walking by human resources. Little did I know that an epiphany would strike: GO IN AND GET HIRED! The first time, I hit a dead end. They said, "We have your resume on file." Ugh. The second time, the following week, I asked, "What file?" They said, "The full-time professor file." I said, "I don't want a full-time job. I want an adjunct position." "Oh," she said, "then you should reapply as an adjunct." While I was there, I said, "Who makes these hiring decisions?" She said, "The chairman of the department you're applying for." "May I have the business chair's number please," I asked. She gave me his secretary, and I called her right then and there. She transferred me to the chair of the business department, and using my kick-ass sales skills, I managed to get an invitation for an interview then and there. He asks, "Are you on campus right now?" Even though I was in t-shirt and jeans, I said, "Yes Sir, I am, and I can be at your office in ten minutes for an interview; where should I meet you?"

Long story short: the meeting was a grand success. When I told him I had a masters of entrepreneurship, he was so impressed. He told me that of the hundreds of applicants, I was the only one who had the energy and enthusiasm he was looking for. He wanted me to teach sales at first, but that fell through. I was so bummed. Once again, no vacancies.

But then, three weeks later--yes, good news coming!--I got an email from the chair of the department: they needed an adjunt to teach Intro to Business, and Human Resources Management. Did I say yes?

YEAH BABY!

Ladies and gentlemen, your good buddy Monroe Mann is now officially a part of academia. Is now officially a college business professor. Is now officially employed in the job of his dreams. Why the job of my dreams? Well, as I always say, to reach your dreams, you need a source of income that is FFF, i.e. Fun, Flexible, and Financially Rewarding. I LOVE teaching and inspiring people and I love business; the job is flexible in that it's only twice a week, and I get some paid sick days, and finally, WCC is one of (if not THE) highest adjunct pay rates in the country. I am getting paid a lot of money for very little of my time. Translation: more money to put into my career in the arts. :)

LESSONS LEARNED:
a) continue to better yourself no matter how many times you get turned down. If you are better and better every time you apply, you are eventually going to get picked.
b) what goes around comes around: 4 years of applications and resumes got me nowhere. Then, it's because I am helping my 'little brother' that I end up getting an interview for the job I had been seeking all along. GO FIGURE. But this is why I try to help as many people as I can---it always comes back to me. Maybe not immediately, but doing the right thing always gives a very high return on investment.

III. OTHER STUFF I AM UP TO

a) TIME ZEN - My new book on time management is going off to the publisher on Wednesday! NOTE: I am selling $200 longevity ads in the back of the book. Want anyone who reads the book to read about what you are doing or selling for an entire year for only $200? CALL ME OR EMAIL ME>

b) PPM DRAFT - I am 75% done with the fundraising documents for my feature horror film, "The Quiet" shooting in Maine, I plan, this spring/summer. So excited!

c) NEW APARTMENT - I just moved into a super cool new apartment in White Plains, New York. If any of you want my mailing address, let me know!

d) SEMINARS GALORE - My seminars at 36 Street Studio have been such a success that they are bringing me in twice a month now indefinitely. Next one: Guerrilla Networking, and then, Personal Financial Management!

e) STARTED UP LAW SCHOOL AGAIN - I started up my last year of law school this past week. I am taking Real Estate Transactions, Advanced Contracts, Family Law, and Trial Advocacy (i.e. how to represent someone in court). LOVE IT SO MUCH! I have also applied for my Masters of Law in Real Estate, which I would start as soon as I get my law degree this May and take the bar in July.

f) NEW FILM SCHOOL CLASS STARTED - I started my 4th Actors Film School session this past Saturday. I am SO stoked. My film school is such a success. If you're interested, more info is below.

g) SALESFORCE.COM -- I have started using a new sales tool called Salesforce for my client and lead management. It is AMAZING. If you are trying to sell something--anything--and you are not using Salesforce, you might want to consider it. It's awesome.

h) MY IRAQ DOCUMENTARY -- I edited 5 more hours of footage this past month, and am pleased to report that I think I might have a rough cut by the end of next summer. Gosh, I have SO much footage.

i) NEED YOUR HELP! -- There's an idiot who posted a horrible and inaccurate review about my book To Benning and Back on Amazon.com. In his review, he admits that he didn't even finish the book---and the whole point of the book is a coming of age journey of how I changed from basic training to becoming an officer in the Army. Meanwhile, there are over 20 5-star reviews of the book, but this 1-star review is the one that everyone sees because so many people have voted it as being 'helpful'. PORT CHESTER - For anyone who has ever dreamed of seeing their name on a movie marquee, Monroe Mann is already a fan.

Mann, a self-described "master of many trades," doesn't hesitate to give aspiring filmmakers reach-for-the-stars pep talks.

"If you want to be successful at something and it's your dream and passion, you can't come up with an excuse for failure," says the 31-year-old former military man, who runs Unstoppable Artists' Actors Film School out of a back room at his father's law firm on Westchester Avenue.

"You gotta fight, fight, fight. I learned that from the Army: don't give up, keep going," he says.

His current students will show their 12 short films to the public for the first time tomorrow at the Helen Mills Theater in Manhattan.

Mann, an actor, author, career consultant and Iraq war veteran, launched his own film school last year after realizing that most film schools don't give students all the skills they need to become a Hollywood bigwig. Some focus on acting and others focus on producing, but few offers lessons on turning talent into a real career," he says.

"Talent is assumed," he says. "That's great you're good, but so is everybody else and most everybody else doesn't succeed. What makes the difference is whether your attitude is better than the competition and if you have a better business sense."

During the 10-week course, students write scripts, shoot, and edit, and learn how to market a movie.

The village is the backdrop for the films, which include four- to seven-minute comedies, dramas, and a horror flick. Students shoot in downtown Port Chester and take advantage of the ethnic restaurants and waterfront.

"Any type of genre restaurant you need you can get without going more than two miles," Mann says. "Port Chester is central to anything. If we need big ships, we can go to Mamaroneck. If we need Ferraris, they are in Greenwich."

Mann wants to expand his school to feature-length film classes and plans to open his own entertainment law firm after he graduates from law school next year.

He acknowledges his high ambitions, but hopes his relentless attitude will inspire other artists.

"Be stubborn. Be delusional," he says. "You can't succeed in an entrepreneurial venture, or especially in show business, unless you are deluded into thinking you are somehow different--that you are going to be one of those elusive few who succeed."

Fightin' Words: "Something lost can usually be found. But not time. Time is one of the few precious resources in life that are a one-time use. Once lost--it's GONE. You can't stock up on it, find it again, or regain it. You can only manage it wisely or squander it wastefully. And often 'making up' for lost time is a lot harder than it sounds. If you aren't using your time as wisely and productively and efficiently as you should be, you're probably feeling pretty stressed right now--stressed, depressed, and filled with regret. Here's the solution--the first step in productive time management is realizing how much you can actually accomplish in one day. Start by implementing some of these simple and proven techniques: Get up an hour earlier. Stay up an hour later. Use daily to-do lists. Create six-month strives. Say 'no' to invitations that you really don't want to accept. Get out of situations that eat up your valuable time. Don't hang out with 'talkers'; hang out with 'doers'. Rye columnist wins $145G in First Amendment case

RYE BROOK - A newspaper columnist who sued Rye town for trying to suppress his free speech has been awarded $145,000 in a settlement that ends years of litigation.

Bernard Abel, founder of The Westmore News, a weekly newspaper that covers Port Chester, Rye Brook and Rye town, claimed in a 2004 federal lawsuit that town officials put a lien on his home for unpaid taxes and had their supporters harass him in an effort to stop negative columns about officials. Abel was a vocal critic of the board's ethics and its hiring and bidding practices.

Abel's lawsuit followed a legal action by former Town Attorney Monroe Mann, who claimed Abel libeled him in a 2003 column that called Mann a "political hatchet man." The column also incorrectly said Mann was a key player in a school board decision 30 years ago to give students short notice about which high school they would attend.

A state Supreme Court jury originally awarded Mann $106,115 in damages, a verdict that was overturned last year by a state appellate court judge. The case worried news organizations, which feared that the verdict would weaken their legal protections in defamation lawsuits.

Abel, 85, said he views the recent settlement as a victory for First Amendment rights.

"You, and I, and everyone have a right to criticize our government," he said. "When our government meets to try and shut us up, it's wrong."

Town Attorney Paul Noto said settling was a smart move because Abel had a strong case.

"It was compelling enough that there was concern that it could have gone poorly for the town," he said. "It didn't seem worth the effort to take that chance."

The town's insurance carrier will pay the settlement and legal fees.

Mann said "it was a disaster to pay money to Mr. Abel," who he said had "unnecessarily derogated me."

Mann argued that his longtime opponent "had personal vindictiveness" about the town's questioning his permanent residency and whether he owed property taxes.

The 87-year-old also disputed that town officials launched a campaign to silence Abel.

"He had as much freedom of speech as he wanted," Mann said. "He had a newspaper; we didn't."

The higher the number, the bigger the potential return on investment.
The lower the number, the higher the priority for you.

Number 1: In other words, your absolute first mission needs to be securing a steady source of dependable income. You see, you need money to invest money, so step one ensures that you have money to invest. Makes sense, right? THEN WHY IS EVERYONE TRYING TO GET RICH QUICK BY BYPASSING STEP ONE? Please: get a steady dependable source of income. I don't care from where. Find it.

Number 2: Next, start taking 10% of every paycheck (or 5%, or 1%, if you must) and start saving. You need at least 6-months of emergency savings. How much emergency savings? Add up your monthly expenses and multiply times six. Voila. You also should at this point consider life and disability insurance if your life situation warrants it.

Number 3: Start with the safest investments. Government bonds are the safest investment you can make. Real estate is traditionally a safe investment too (if you know what you are doing when you buy) because real property is REAL--it's a tangible asset, which traditionally has a lower risk level associated with it. Finally, you might want to at this point consider starting your IRA (Individual Retirement Account).

Number 4: Mutual Funds are convenient because someone else is doing the stock picking for you. But you have to pay management fees typically. That's why I like index funds and ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) more. These simply track a particular exchange or index, i.e. the QQQQ tracks the Nasdaq, and the Spyder tracks the S&P 500. You buy it, and voila, you just bought the market... literally. And you don't have to pay management fees. Ahhh...

Number 5: Feeling saucy? Consider doing your own stock analysis and buying individual stocks, either for growth, or for the quarterly dividend cash payouts. You might at this point start investigating options trading. Covered calls ROCK. Basically you buy 100 shares of a particular stock. Then, you sell to someone else the right to buy those 100 shares at a particular 'strike price'. If the option expires at the end of the month (which it usually does), you not only keep your 100 shares, but you also keep the option premium that the other investor paid you. The next month? Do it again. You can make a nice side income this way---collecting option expiration premiums from your covered calls at the end of each month. Cool, right? A great book talking about this is Robert Allen's Multiple Streams of Income.

Number 6: Finally, the riskiest investment of all? STARTING AND RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS. Two important notes: a) starting your own business has the biggest potential for you to become a multi-millionaire. b) many of you reading this are artists, and don't even realize that you are already engaged in the riskiest investment of all: pursuing your own business in the arts.

NOTE: just because the steps are numbered doesn't mean you HAVE to go in order, but that is the most efficient and logical and 'safest' way to tackle your money management plans.

Now, how to make more money? Guys, it is simple. INCREASE YOUR INCOME. How to do that? Ahhh, there's the rub. But that's how you make more money: JUST INCREASE YOUR INCOME (and reduce your expenses). Do whatever it takes. Get a better paying job. Go back to school so that you can get a better paying job. Start a business that takes off like a rocket. Become an investment tycoon and kill it in the stock market. Start flipping houses. Whateva! Why do you think I'm getting my MBA? In law school? Writing books? Own three businesses? BECAUSE I KNOW THE ROAD TO MILLIONAIRE AND I AM ON IT.

I want you to be on it too. Therefore, I heartily recommend you follow step one first: find a steady and dependable source of income. Because if you learn steps 2 - 6, you are going to be able to multiply that relatively miniscule Step 1 income into MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. Oohh, can you smell that money? Hey, is that you I see swimming in an olympic-size pool of hundred dollar bills. Hey, pool party!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHA! My critics have found YouTube! Yippee!

Read this. You're gonna laugh, and get inspired. I promise.

As many of you know, over the years, as I have gained more and more visibility and media presence, I have also gained a lot of critics. Most notably, on my IMDb page, I have a horde of critics who it seems do nothing throughout the day but figure out ways to trash me, and tell me how much I suck. It got so bad that there's actually a website devoted to "100 THINGS I HATE ABOUT MONROE MANN". Search for it; I think you can still find it. I also got death threats three times, and had to call the FBI. Yay!

Well, the fun continues! You see, recently, I have begun posting my music performances from Pete's Candy Store up on YouTube. And go figure, the critics have found their way there too. Same people? Who knows.

This is the latest post, regarding my song, "Rob Lowe"

"Dude you're a pathetic loser!!! You can't sing, you can't play the guitar, and you look stupid on stage. Figured someone had to tell you the truth. And if you want people to feel sorry for you, I have three words: MONROE MANN SUCKS" -- the latest critic's thoughts.

I'm happy to see that they have expanded from IMDb to also include You Tube. AWESOME!

Years ago, this type of criticism would have devasted me. Think about it: now anyone who goes to my youtube page is going to read that. And let's be honest, it's pretty brutal.

BUT I DO NOT CARE! It honestly doesn't bother me anymore. I laugh actually. Go look at what I posted in reply and you might laugh too.

Guys, seriously, don't let people get you down. I used to take their criticism to heart. In reality, though, does it matter what they think? WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?

Funny, I checked the profile of this person who posted that review: Professor426. Go figure, whoever it is joined TODAY, for the sole purpose of posting that negative review. This person is a NOBODY.

Could I improve my singing? Sure. Could I improve my guitar playing? Sure. Could I improve my stage presence? Sure. And DUH, why do you think I am playing there EVERY SINGLE SUNDAY? It's called... practice. And my gosh, talk about improvement. That Rob Lowe song was the FIRST SONG I HAVE PLAYED LIVE IN THREE YEARS! First of all, it's not that bad. Go ahead, watch it: (Rob Lowe) But even so, compare that performance three weeks ago with my performance from last Sunday
of (I Miss the Summer) and (Life Is Tough). In just three weeks, I have improved SO much, and even I can tell that just by watching the videos. I am more confident on stage; more relaxed; my playing is better; my voice is better.

And the videos! My mom asked me, "Monroe, why are you posting these videos when you are not performing perfectly?" The anwer: GOOD NOW IS BETTER THAN PERFECT NEVER! At least you guys are able to hear some of my songs. At least I am now getting feedback from hundreds of people on what is working, and what is not. And to me, publicity is publicity! Let them trash me. I don't care. I know that I am getting better and better with every performance, and that is the only thing that matters to me. And I think it's fun that you are all able to see my artistic progression on YouTube.

And I think it is SO funny that I, Monroe Mann---a relatively unknown wannabe rock star/movie star--has aroused the ire of this person so much that they feel the need to join youtube JUST for the sole purpose of bashing me. As I have said a million times: this means only one thing. I AM BECOMING FAMOUS.

Why? Because go take a look at Keanu Reeves page on IMDb. Go take a look at Susan Boyle's page on YouTube. What do you see? CRITICS! People saying that Keanu Reeves sucks as an actor. That Susan Boyle is a homely loser. Blah blah. SCREW THEM ALL! Let the critics loose! It means I am doing something so damn amazing that it's worth their time to criticize me. And honestly, I had just better get used to it---just as you need to as well--cause when I become a star, it's only going to get WORSE. Weird, right? The more people criticize you, the more of a star it means you are becoming. Wild, right? Oddly inspiring, and ironic to no end! As Craig Ferguson would say in his Scottish brogue, "I KNOW!" And as I quote in my book, "Battle Cries for the Underdog", Jean Sibelius once said, "Pay no attention to what the critics say; no statue has ever been erected to a critic."

On that note, if any of you feel the need to bash me too, feel free. I revel in the criticism. Or, if you want to be a rebel and help me FIGHT THE DARK SIDE, go to these links and post a glowing review. But whatever you do: BE HONEST. I don't want to just get empty compliments. Tell me what's good; tell me how I can improve. With your help, I in fact WILL become that rock star movie star that would infuriate these idiots more than ever; I think their heads are actually going to explode when I actually do make it and make it big. And boys and girls, it's right around the corner. :)

EXCERPT FROM MY UPCOMING BOOK "TIME ZEN"

The truth of the matter is that most major success in this right-brain, internet-connected, uber-competitive world no longer comes from doing things consecutively. If you do things consecutively, you lose. That is a fact. Slow and steady may have won the race in the past, but today, in order to even get into the race, you have to be the one organizing it too, and doing everything all at the same time.

In other words, in today's world, it's the multitasker who wins the race—because often you can't get into the race unless you put the thing together too. Sure, forty years ago, you could focus on one trade and get a job that would support you for the rest of your life. These days, though, you're fortunate if you have the same job in the same industry for a few years. The time to become a little bit more diverse in your pursuits has returned. Da Vinci would be proud.

And in this new day and age, if you can't keep up with those of us who know 'how to juggle' multiple projects, then tough luck, you're gonna be left in the dust. Yes, we have entered the age of the time masters, and you would choose well to join us. While time itself moves forward on a single timeline, that doesn't mean your projects have to move forward on that single timeline. Instead, the idea is to propel many projects forward on a whole bunch of timelines.

In other words (and here's the basic time philosophy of the book):

Doing one thing at a time is a recipe for a life that won't keep up with your dreams.

You see, while each of us does only have 24 hours in a day, that's the wrong way to look at time management. The key to successfully doing more, in less time, and with better results, is to stop thinking linearly, and start thinking spacially and synergistically.

Think of all those people who have done amazing things with their lives. For example, Da Vinci, Edison, Thatcher, and even in our own time, Spielberg or Stefani. Do you really think that they've done so much with their lives by focusing on just one thing, and then moving to the next in a linear manner? Da Vinci was working on scientific musings at the same time he was drawing, inventing, and theoreticizing. Spielberg was writing screenplays while he was directing them, producing them, and casting them. Edison was failing for the thousandth time on the light bulb while he was working on hundreds of other inventions at the same time. Stefani was recording while designing clothes. And I am writing this book while I am also writing three others, while in law school, while shooting two films, while running my businesses, and while rehearsing my songs to perform at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn. Focusing is for losers—for those boring people who have the ability to speak only to a select group of people at a cocktail party that understand or care about their particular niche.

I know that some studies have concluded that multitasking actually reduces the amount of brain power we are using, citing examples that today's youth know all about multitasking and processing, but little about focusing and analysis. There may be a lot of truth to that analysis but it leaves out an important point: multitasking and processing by itself may be of little use, but when you combine those qualities with focus and analysis, it's quite amazing what one can accomplish. And that is what this book is all about.

So now, I am practising all my songs with my eyes closed, to learn to find the chords without having to look. b) you have GOT to keep the same rhythm despite the adrenaline. I could hear myself speeding up every once in a while. Time for me to practice with a metronome every day to calm those excitable nerves. c) RECORD YOUR SHOWS AND WATCH THEM. Wow---I can't believe how many other things I picked up on just by watching this video on how to better my performance, stage presence, costumes, patter, and the list goes on. If you have any tips for me, give me your feedback on the youtube videos. I'm all ears. :)

It is tentatively called, "Running for Famous" and will be the most inspiring and heartfelt one-man show you have ever seen---chronicling my life from the day I decided to become a professional performer and my 100 'almost big breaks' to my deployment to Iraq and decision to go to law school and continue to take over this business. You are gonna LOVE IT. More to come!

5) NEW T-SHIRT LINE: By popular demand, I am finally taking the plunge, and it's getting so close to becoming official---my trademarked "No Rules, No Excuses, No Regrets" t-shirt line. I am partnering up with two of my friends to make it happen: Faith Smith, CEO of IceCreamShades.com (a kids sunglasses company in Los Angeles) and Knox Vanderpool (CEO of SayIWont.com, a motivational t-shirt company). I'm making adult t-shirts, baby doll t-shirts for women, and tiny little baby tshirts for little tikes. How awesome to see little kids running around with NRNENR t shirts! haha! Awesome. Would you be interested in purchasing one or more of these shirts for yourself, friends, or children? Let me know--I'm trying to gauge the interest.

6) MY DBA APPLICATION WAS RECEIVED! I apparently am a glutten for punishment. As I near the end of my educational forays with my MBA and my JD this year, I am embarking on yet another: a doctorate. DBA stands for what? Doctor of Business Administration. It's a joint 5-year program through University of Newcastle in England and Grenoble University in France. Aww, shucks, so now I'll have to go to Europe two weeks a year to meet my graduate adviser and meet my fellow students. LIFE SUCKS. Oh, and check this out: the Army is paying for half of my school from this point forward, thanks to the new GI Bill, and my service in Iraq in 2005. Is that awesome!!! My semester law school bills went from $25,000 to $11,000. And... apparently I get a $1200 housing allowance as well, every month. Who said sacrificing for your country only made you feel good on the inside! And all I had to do was put my life on the line, suffer some nerve damage, and live through the paranoia and downright fright of loud noises for the rest of my life ha ha.

7) NEW APARTMENT: I just signed the lease on my new apartment in Port Chester. Pretty stoked, because I've been crashing at my parent's place ever since I got back from Iraq. Guess what: the place has a pool! So, if anyone wants to come visit me and go swimming, let me know. I move in on August 1st, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

8) PERMIT: Those of you on Facebook have been trying to guess what the heck I meant when I said I was just approved for the most awesome permit by Westchester County. It is something I had to fight really hard for, something I had to go on many interviews for, something that required filling out affidavits, appeals, and pleadings. But in the end, I was APPROVED! I can't share with you what I was approved for, unfortunately. I know, you're annoyed with me now, but they put their trust in me, and I am not going to violate that trust. I just wanted to let you know that ANYTHING is possible if you put your mind to it. I was absolutely floored when I got the letter yesterday that read, "APPROVED." Scha-wing!

9) AFS FILM FESTIVAL: Mark your calendars. Saturday August 15th 7 - 9PM is the day you can come to the Helen Mills Theater in Manhattan and watch all of the movies my students and I have shot in my Actors Film School film program to date. Admission is free, but limited to only about 40 people from this email list. If you are interested in seeing the films (particularly if you're interested in attending the film school), this would be a great opportunity to meet the filmmakers, to meet me, and to see how much more awesome my film school is than any other you could invest your time or money in. Reply to this email if you are interested in attending. There will be an after party from 9 - ?? at the Black Door bar, right next door---everyone is welcome. Note: If you check my page on IMDb.com, you'll see that all AFS film school projects get listings on IMDb. Not all of them are up yet, but a good number of them are. Doing one thing at a time is a recipe for a life that won't keep up with your dreams.

I know that some studies have concluded that multitasking actually reduces the amount of brain power we are using, citing examples that today's youth know all about multitasking and processing, but little about focusing and analysis. There may be a lot of truth to that analysis but it leaves out an important point: multitasking and processing by itself may be of little use, but when you combine those qualities with focus and analysis, it's quite amazing what one can accomplish. And that is what this book is all about.

COME SEE ME PLAY MUSIC TONIGHT AT PETE'S CANDY STORE IN BROOKLYN.

I am so excited! I am rocking out my songs "Hollywood Girls" and a new one called, "Rob Lowe Melody" about this amazing girl I know who I love so much (and will never forget) THIS SUNDAY NIGHT (tonight) at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn. This is the first time I've been on stage solo since my return from Iraq, and I am so excited! It's "just" an open mic, but I sure would love to see your smiling face there.

If you wanna be sure to see me, show up at 5 and hang till 8. It'll be tons of fun: since it's an open mic, I'll be sitting in the audience with you till I get called up to stage, and I'd be happy to make friends with anyone who drops by. I'll be wearing a straw fedora hat with an electric classical guitar, so look for me and introduce yourself! Bring any of my books and I'll be happy to sign them. :)
